Laos has a long history with France, and for that reason, you’ll find a lot of French food restaurants throughout the main cities like Vientiane and Luang Prabang. In Luang Prabang, L’Elephant Restaurant is one of the most renowned high end French restaurants in the city.

What I liked and the reason I wanted to try L’Elephant Restaurant when I was in Luang Prabang is mainly because they use mostly local Laos ingredients, but French cooking techniques. So I made a reservation.

L’Elephant Restaurant – Located in a classic yellow building just a few steps from the Mekong River, L’Elephant Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant. They do have both French food and Lao food on their menu, but I decided to keep the dishes pretty French and the ingredients Laos.

Buffalo steak tartare – This was the first dish I for sure was going to order, and I think it’s one of their best dishes. The buffalo was chopped, mixed with egg, pickles, and capers. It was every bit as good as I thought it was going to be.

Wild boar terrine – This was something I sort of ordered and didn’t know what it was. A terrine is a kind of meat loaf, sort of like pate but different. This one was seasoned with some cognac as well. It was ok, but not my favorite dish of the meal.

Chef salad – The chef salad at L’Elephant Restaurant is amazing, full of their garden grown vegetables.

Flemish buffalo carbonade with Beerlao – Seeing that Beerlao was used in this dish, I had to try it out. The stew was excellent, with just a scent of beerlao – I think.

Mekong fish stew – Finally the last French food we tried was the Mekong fish stew – nuggets of Mekong fish, in a mustard butter white sauce. The fish melted in your mouth, it was so good.

L’Elephant Restaurant is an elegant French food restaurant in Luang Prabang, Laos. I thought the dishes could have been a little bigger, but the taste and quality were both excellent.

  1. You seem like a great guy and your comments are often funny. However, your palate must be seriously damaged as you seem only to be able to taste extreme chili and sour flavours. You pick up on textures but not subtile tastes which you often call "bland"! Maybe a month or two on a chili purge/fast could get your taste buds working better.

  2. You know Mark loves his steak tartare, because he always eats it first, even if there is table full of warm food, which could be smart to taste first.

  3. I could have eaten the entire meal to get full it looked like in the video. Each dish looked like only 4 – 6 medium size bites. Looks like you need to get a soup, a salad, an appetizer, one or two main dishes depending on size, a couple of veggie side dishes and a dessert to get full there. With plenty of tea or other beverage to wash it down. Looked good but very sparse.

  4. Oh God Mark, You eating in a high class business and you try and eat with your fingers, sit up and back , please don't lay in your food. I know it's good. Great Video. LOL the lady in the background has horrible table manners, she is laying on the table with her elbows, Today's world has forgotten how to act in public.
