The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku was a magnitude 9.0 (Mw) undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST (05:46 UTC) on Friday 11 March 2011, with the epicentre approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi) east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku and the hypocenter at an underwater depth of approximately 30 km (19 mi).The earthquake is also often referred to in Japan as the Great East Japan earthquake and also known as the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, and the 3.11 earthquake. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded to have hit Japan, and the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began in 1900. The earthquake triggered powerful tsunami waves that reached heights of up to 40.5 metres (133 ft) in Miyako in Tōhoku’s Iwate Prefecture, and which, in the Sendai area, travelled up to 10 km (6 mi) inland. The earthquake moved Honshu (the main island of Japan) 2.4 m (8 ft) east and shifted the Earth on its axis by estimates of between 10 cm (4 in) and 25 cm (10 in), and generated sound waves detected by the low-orbiting GOCE satellite.

  1. This is my sons account, but I was there after the disaster when the Australian government sent military aid to help, it was so sad to see kids without their parents and i remember to this day a boy who was sitting next to a scooter I approached him and he had lost his parents and his home, intact I still am in contact with him he’s now in I think it’s year 10, and I will never forget how strong courageous the Japanese people are

  2. Today I somehow remembered this earthquake. And I found this video. There's only one thing I want to say.I'm really sorry. This is a disaster.Pray fo Japan from Turkey.

  3. I really extremely sad that japan who died in Japan.

  4. A tragedy, yes. What about the sailors that went to help on 23 March 2011? The USS Ronald Reagan went to render aid to the Japanese people. They were told by Japanese officials that there was no measurable radiation and there was no danger. The Reagan approached and the crew on the flight deck ready rescue helicopters. It was cold and snowing, but out of nowhere a warm, almost hot breeze hit them. Radiation alarms sounded and and everyone went inside for general quarters. The first sailor to show signs of radiation poisoning was a 19 year old female. She presented with a feeling of a bloody nose and the taste of aluminum. The medical department ordered everyone that was on the flight deck to report to the fo'c'sle, pronounced folks saul, a part of the ship all the way forward. The group had to be decontaminated, all clothing except for underwear was bagged and tagged and the crew had to be scrubbed with brushes like you would scrub your shower with. A minimum of 2 layers of skin have to be removed. You can tell by seeing blood in certain spots of the body. The water tested positive for radiation and was secured, bottled water was used meant for the public.
The Japanese government has stated that it was impossible for the radiation to come from Fukushima. The US government has tried to keep the crew quiet because they don't want to harm US – Japan relations. As of 19 March 2018, 9 sailors have died due to proven radiation poisoning. Other crew member have been diagnosed with various forms of cancer and even chromosome degradation.
It's funny how it's always the heroes that are forgotten. And yes, they did pull both survivors and bodies out of the water.
