The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku (東北地方太平洋沖地震 Tōhoku-chihō Taiheiyō Oki Jishin?) was a magnitude 9.0–9.1 (Mw) undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST (05:46 UTC) on Friday 11 March 2011,[7][8][9] with the epicentre approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi) east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku and the hypocenter at an underwater depth of approximately 29 km (18 mi).[7][10] The earthquake is also often referred to in Japan as the Great East Japan earthquake (東日本大震災 Higashi nihon daishinsai?)[11][12][13][fn 1] and also known as the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake,[27] and the 3.11 earthquake. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded to have hit Japan, and the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began in 1900.[9][28][29] The earthquake triggered powerful tsunami waves that reached heights of up to 40.5 metres (133 ft) in Miyako in Tōhoku’s Iwate Prefecture,[30][31] and which, in the Sendai area, traveled up to 10 km (6 mi) inland.[32] The earthquake moved Honshu (the main island of Japan) 2.4 m (8 ft) east, shifted the Earth on its axis by estimates of between 10 cm (4 in) and 25 cm (10 in),[33][34][35] and generated infrasound waves detected in perturbations of the low-orbiting GOCE satellite.[36]

On 10 March 2015, a Japanese National Police Agency report confirmed 15,894 deaths,[37] 6,152 injured,[38] and 2,562 people missing[39] across twenty prefectures, as well as 228,863 people living away from their home in either temporary housing or due to permanent relocation.[40] A 10 February 2014 agency report listed 127,290 buildings totally collapsed, with a further 272,788 buildings “half collapsed”, and another 747,989 buildings partially damaged.[41] The earthquake and tsunami also caused extensive and severe structural damage in north-eastern Japan, including heavy damage to roads and railways as well as fires in many areas, and a dam collapse.[32][42] Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said, “In the 65 years after the end of World War II, this is the toughest and the most difficult crisis for Japan.”[43] Around 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan were left without electricity and 1.5 million without water.[44]

The tsunami caused nuclear accidents, primarily the level 7 meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex, and the associated evacuation zones affecting hundreds of thousands of residents.[45][46] Many electrical generators were taken down, and at least three nuclear reactors suffered explosions due to hydrogen gas that had built up within their outer containment buildings after cooling system failure resulting from the loss of electrical power. Residents within a 20 km (12 mi) radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and a 10 km (6.2 mi) radius of the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant were evacuated.

Early estimates placed insured losses from the earthquake alone at US$14.5 to $34.6 billion.[47] The Bank of Japan offered ¥15 trillion (US$183 billion) to the banking system on 14 March in an effort to normalize market conditions.[48] The World Bank’s estimated economic cost was US$235 billion, making it the costliest natural disaster in world history.

  1. I can't click like or dislike. There needs to be a sad button to click on. I can only sit here in dismay, watching this. All these years later and it's like I'm watching it actually happen right now on the news. This is horrifying. My god I can't imagine the terror of that day to those people there. My heart hurts for all those who lost their lives and to those who lost their homes and city :'(

  2. May God bless their souls for lever I hope they are all in quiet and sunny paradise away of pain and sorrow.
    Best regards from Poland

  3. God does not punish. We bring on our own punishment. Japan needs to repent and turn to Jesus as God and Savior, and not to fat Buddha. Buddha is a finite god just like the Roman of war, Mars. Jesus is the infinite God. Japan is not the only place that suffers punishment for their sins, New Orleans in the USA did, Hurricane Katrina. There was so much evil in that city.

  4. the worst places hit by the tsunami. are they below sea level or what? it looks like there is some sort of barrier in the ports. i know the water rises significantly when there is a tsunami but the places look like they are on low ground

  5. grabs goggles and floaties for my next trip to japan

But in all seriousness my heart goes to all the lives that were lost and to all the family members who are grieving due to this incident. May you rest in peace

  6. Look at the devastation. And even far more devastating are all the people looking at it erroneously thanking the God they pretend to care about, that they still have a house. Everything is about belongings. Read the comments. I see disaster, but staying on the watch means this world is coming to an end and this was all predicted. If you act shocked, you are not thinking about the power of God, or that our days are numbered. This video is a blink in time. Hopefully anyone who passed had no memory of this and is with the Lord. Yet your eternity rides on faith, and still, you see belongings. Go watch the "Francis Chan rope" video.

  7. It's pretty stupid how I have a machine to tell people that I'm not available at the moment, but they can't get a machine to warn people about the tsunami. Instead they have a live person staying inside a building till the very end warning people and sacrificing her life.

  8. God I can’t even imagine… the scariest natural disaster I’ve been thru was an 85mph storm that almost killed my kids as it took our 10 man tent and blew it away into the sky and demolished it.. luckily my kids got out right at the last second before it got ripped outta my hands but natural disasters are no joke.. you wouldn’t think a storm w winds of 85mph would be that scary but OMG i thought we were all goners! I mean you couldn’t hear, couldn’t see 10 ft n front of you.. tree branches are flying past yer head.. total and complete chaos. Sadly one of my best friends had a heart attack and got hit by debris and collapsed and died right there. He was 41 years old. ?We did CPR on him to no avail. Felt like a hurricane as our camp sight was right next to the water at lake Mcconaughy Nebraska.. that was the scariest thing I’ve ever been though so I cannot even imagine the fear of these tsunamis that people have been thru..

    RIP John! Died on 06/24/2018

  9. It's really freaky and unsettling to see large amount of water and debris moving through the land at such speed, pushing everything in its way

  10. Japan came back quickly to its feet .if this disaster was to happen in America then crybabies for assistance for years when ever a natural disaster strikes America first thing on news are crybabies they cannot take anything like brave people of other countries. Only time bravery is shown is in Hollywood movies.

  11. This is horrific. I can’t even imagine the horror those poor souls must have felt as they knew they weren’t going to survive. RIP to everyone who lost their lives that day and the days thereafter.

  12. So sad, what a disaster. I was shocked when it said nearly 1000 people lost their lives… I think when people heard the warning to evacuat most people left but othere chose to stay and I think the main reason why is because they underestimated the devastating power! Because they had time, earthquake then the alarms and emergency announcements being broadcasted across the town ect… get out of there!!!

  13. I can't imagine that can happen in real, It's horrible, I'm very sad for them. Japanese are bold people luckily they are a strong economy and Japan is an important part of our technical world.
    WE PROUD OF YOU JAPAN!
    Condolences from Afghanistan!
