Surfer Experiences Terrifying Wipeout in Nazare, Portugal

A surfer experiences a terrifying wipeout in Nazare, Portugal, as a huge wave hits surfer Thiago Jacaré, who has a dramatic rescue to get him out of the water.

A dramatic video of the incident shows Thiago Jacaré, 35, hit a bump and fall as he rides a giant wave.

He is immediately swallowed by a wall of white water and is held down for several seconds.

He surfaces just in time to catch a breath before taking another monster wave on the head.

His teammate, big wave surfer David Langer, is unable to rescue Jacaré on his jet ski because he’s floating around right in the impact zone.

Eventually, after taking a total of five waves on the head, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner manages to pick up Jacaré on his jet ski and whisk him away from danger to the beach.

Although completely exhausted, Jacaré was unharmed in the terrifying ordeal.

He was taken by ambulance to hospital as a safety precaution.

“This was by far the worst wipeout of my life, I barely got the chance to breathe between waves,” Jacaré later told the filmer.

“When I got to the sand, I was completely exhausted, to the point I couldn’t even move,” he added.

“I want to thank Sebastian Steudtner for the rescue…I won’t ever forget this day!” he concluded.

Thiago Jacaré is an experienced big wave surfer from Brazil.

He worked for many years as a professional lifeguard and is also involved in the organisation of big wave competitions in Brazil.

Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, became famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011 when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world record for the largest wave ever surfed.

  1. Wow imagine taking three of those waves in a row then imagine what he went through he took three of those waves with a broken back

  3. This might be the most terrifying thing to ever experience I feel so bad for them… This feeling when it just feels like any extra microsecond underwater would kill you and the next one is even worse, that moment when you don't have time to catch your breath and that waves keep swallowing you again and again so powerful that the only thing you can possibly do is drowning and hope for someone to get you out of here… This is truly the worst feeling ever you just want to breath one more time but you can't do anything and so you panic and lose all your energy and all the air you bad left and it feels so desesparate… Those people are heroes, they are fucking survivors, at this time when you get the choice to swallow the last watercup and stop suffering or to hold your breath that little extra second that feels like eternity and don't even know if you'll be able to catch your breath one more time… Well they are so brave and I wish to nobody to ever live this in their whole lifetime…

  4. My idea would be an oxygen chamber (bag) of sufficient capacity, which would be coupled to the surfer's clothing at the back, and attached by a thin flexible tube to a mascara embedded in one of the sleeves at the height of the pulses to be triggered. So the surfer could have a breath until his final rescue.
