Unpopular opinion: he's intimidating the dog enormously. Wedging your great big bulk into the majority of the kennel space is a terrible idea. To sit there, higher than the dog and block any "escape" is cruel.
Healing a dog's mental state takes TIME – you can't, and definitely shouldn't, force it. "oh, b…but the dog wouldn't eat!" – after 25 years rescuing dogs I can tell you NO dog will let itself starve. It absolutely would have eaten eventually, probably when everyone had gone and NOT when some huge man was eating next to it – pack behavior n all!
