Some 40 animals rescued from a private zoo in Gaza’s Rafah, were filmed roaming around their new enclosures having arrived at a sanctuary in Jerash in the northwest of Jordan on Monday.
A rescue operation for the animals took place on Thursday, after the Israeli blockade on Gaza meant the private zoo owner was unable to provide for them.
Four Paws, an Austrian group specialised in rescuing, rehabilitating and treating sick animals, carried out the operation. The animals will now receive medical evaluations and treatment courtesy of their new home.
Princess Alia Bint Al Hussein of Jordan thanked Gazans for entrusting the care of the animals to Jordan, and emphasised that she understood the importance of zoos as places of learning and recreation for families in Gaza.
“We highly appreciate Gazans’ trust in us to take care of the animals. We have other lions who were transferred to this place and were visited by their owners. We hope for the best for everybody, and are fully aware that people need places like zoos to take their children for a picnic,” she said.
In January, it was reported that four lion cubs froze to death at Rafah Zoo while several other animals were left sick and malnourished due to the poor living conditions in the Gaza Strip.
