Four emaciated horses have been rescued from alleged animal abuse after being used as pack animals in the Havasupai nation. On April 5, an FBI special agent visited the property of Leland Joe, who now faces charges. The agent reported that there was no visible food or vegetation available to the five horses on the property.
Currently, the four horses that were rescued from the property are at the Coconino Humane Association, where, according to Michelle Ryan, the horses are receiving plenty of food and water, along with antibiotic care.
Susan Ash, from the Stop Animal Violence (S.A.V.E.) organization, contacted federal officials in order to discuss options for helping the horses, as the Havasupai nation is a sovereign nation. Leland Joe is now facing four separate felony charges related to animal neglect.
The horses are now on the road to recovery as the investigation continues and the Coconino Humane Association is accepting donations to help with the horses’ care.
