One of the greatest anti-war thrillers ever, FAIL-SAFE stars Henry Fonda, Walter Mathau, Dan O’Herlihy, Larry Hagman and Fritz Weaver (in his film debut) as a group of military men on the verge of World War III. When a military computer error deploys a squadron of SAC bombers to destroy Moscow, theAmerican President (Fonda) tries to call them back. But their sophisticated fail-safe system prevents him from aborting the attack, so he must convince the Soviets not to retaliate. In desperation, the President offers to sacrifice an American city if his pilots succeed in their deadly mission overMoscow. A four-star techno-thriller that builds tension and suspense with every tick of the nuclearclock. (Original Title – Fail Safe (1964)) © 1963, renewed 1991 Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. In the book, Groteschele screwed the cunt right off Ilsa Wolfe before he slapped her.
Surprised the Russians refused New York as a compliment to Moscow. Shouldn’t Fonda had dropped the bombs on D.C.
They had us watch this movie in a general assembly when I was in the 8th grade in 1973…the heart of the cold war and it scared the crap out of me. It's amazing how 30 year olds know nothing of what it was like to live under the threat of nuclear annihilation for the better part of the first half of your life. All of us with a conscience and an awareness of what was going on had a very fatalistic attitude about life and the future. Many people were firmly convinced that these 2 diametrically opposed governing philosophies would inevitably engage in a conflict that would end the world or that Mutual Assured Destruction would succumb to an accident, as in this film, if the guns were cocked and aimed at one another for long enough. Any time conversation went to talking about progress or the new millennium, then 30 years off, you would inevitably say…"but we'll never see that…the world is going to be destroyed in a nuclear apocalypse before then". It was a very depressing and anxiety filled time to live in and grow up in.
One of the best movies of all time, the black and white set's the tone and the magnificent acting only enhances the suspense
