A hold down in big wave surf takes extraordinary mental strength in order to survive. When over 1 million pounds of water moving 60 miles/hour is landing on top of your body, it only seems natural for the human mind to panic. For Australian Storm Surfers Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll, using a specific strategy to force the mind into a peaceful place helps to avoid panicking, which can lead to death.
Carroll had the scare of his life while surfing Cow Bombie, a deep sea reef break off Margaret River. Watch as the duo survive some of the most frightening rides of their lives. Listen to Clarke-Jones as he describes where he travels mentally during the grueling wipeouts he experiences as a big waves surfer.

Is that summer bay from home and away when that man is talking
Adrenalin junkies paradise, I did a couple of these with an inflatable wetsuit, what a rush, never again, leave well enough alone.
The near death experience probably creates his night club escape
CREATIVE VISUALIZATIONS.YOGA TRAINING 101.
"Nightclub scene" paused at 1:28 I died ROFL
on speed or md i can hold my breath much longer than sober xD

Small portable oxygen tank
Surprise, a guy who rides deadly monsters for fun is fucking bonkers.
Lack of 02,blows to the head and weed over a period of time give surfers their own language and outlook on things.
1:25 Ross Clark Jones… WTF?! XD
Dad dancin
wtf is this dude talking about??
Id like to know how you handle a wipeout like this? Anyone have any ideas
Oh Ross, your certainly not the example for the younger generations. I remember the first time I met you in Hawaii, you were doing lines of cocaine with Occy, somewhere in 1991 or so. I totally lost my reality with legendary surfers in that moment, what a sham scam the industry presents to lure in young aspiring surf groms. This video shows how much your still out there in your cocaine night club dance spinning girls all round fantasies. Your an amazing surfer but one has to ask, how many times out in the waves have you been high on cocaine or other substance? We all have read or viewed Carroll confessions to habitual meth use throughout his life. What a pity, a bit like professional baseball players who cheat with drugs to accomplish record breaking thresholds. I really feel like I wasted my life in surfing in my early days looking up to guys like you. Loser.
shit looking bogan club
I can't, and will never know what is like to be held down for so long. But within my wave size scale and year and a half surfing I could already experience the difference of a positive thought while going under!
It's amazing what the right mindset can do for you!
Anyway, after this one I think I always go down with a smile!
lungs of steel!
"I've never told anybody this.. but I imagine myself in a nightclub!" hahaha classic!! sounds like a solid technique when getting rag dolled on a wave like this.. looks like it works too 'cause he's still going!
That was a pisser!
the mindset you must have to almost drown and instead of panicking, you just calm down and find a moment to bring you back in
those dance moves doe…
its more scary when waves keep falling on ya cos you can start to panic
big surfers!!!!
What a legend!
RCJ has me laughing my nut off.."Nutter"
Ross Clark-Jones is Mental..:) The Night Club experience is so funny
DANG that is intense
hMMMM, not a bad sort of surreal dream, but personally the times I have been thrashed and dragged under water were a fcking nightmare!
Scary
This might be the best advice anyone has ever given me…
That's how these guys survive these big wave falls? They all have jetski backups to help them? I always wondered because I've been destroyed by waves like 1/10 this size.
@***** ya thats smart. i do the same thing. just try to relax and stay calm. i can't imagine how hard it is when your under water for 40 seconds + haha 🙁 anything a couple feet over head is fun, when it gets bigger than that, its super gnarly
you are NOT alone !
Well said
oh yeah, the nightclub footage was hilarious. it actually inspired me to go to a club tonight. thanks.
i have a hard time not panicking in a big wave. holding the breath is one thing, but when youre getting thrashed around. the biggest wave i ever surfed, i swam so hard to catch it that i was instantly out of breath when i caught it, and fell. i almost drowned. i will never look at surfing the same after that bc i cant help thinking of that experience.
That's funny because I have had the complete opposite experience. Being held down so long you wonder if that's it and you are in a lot of pain and panic. I wonder if he is just saying that or he is a very special person.
Boots boots boots boots boots, im in the club; wait no, i'm spinning at the bottom of an ocean, my bad.
This video only has one dislike lol..
