Josephine was first seen two days ago by divers near the Frederiksted Pier. She was sitting on a sea sponge, with a long fishing line tangled around her flippers and her neck.

They untangled her, but discovered that the line went into her mouth and down her throat.

They were able to remove one hook that was embedded in her skin next to a front flipper. But the fishing line that goes down her throat can not be pulled out – it appears to be stuck, but X-rays have not revealed another hook. So last night Dr. Michelle gave Josephine barium liquid – yes, we used a puppy Kong to prop her mouth open, so the barium could be administered through a tube into her esophagus.

Josephine has been given IV fluids and her shell rubbed with lubricant to keep her moist. More x-rays will be taken soon.

We put a camera into Josephine’s stomach to see if we could find an obstruction.

As you can see from video, we could not trace the fishing line to the end.
Something prevented the endoscope from going further. So, on to Plan B: Dr. Mehalick cut the line as short as possible. Hopefully, the remaining portion of fishing line will move through her stomach and intestines as she starts eating.
