(CNN)Tennessee is under a state of emergency after the deadliest tornado day in seven years.

Putnam County officials went door to door Tuesday searching 150 standing structures. They planned to continue through the night into Wednesday morning, aiming to find people in the subdivisions hardest hit by the severe weather and at least one tornado.
Before dawn on Tuesday, 24 people were killed and hundreds of buildings were destroyed in the Tennessee storms. Officials in Putnam County, which suffered 18 storm-related deaths, have said they are working to locate 38 people who are unaccounted for.

Ahead of the destruction, East Nashville residents only had 6 minutes to prepare and get to safety, according to the Tornado Warning for Davidson county.

Tornadoes Kill 25 in Tennessee, Shredding Buildings in Nashville Area
A powerful storm system cut a path through the middle of Tennessee early Tuesday morning, toppling electrical lines and littering streets with debris.

DOUBLE SPRINGS, Tenn. — Jean Gregory had been fast asleep when her husband yanked her to the floor and flung himself on top of her for six, seven, maybe 10 minutes, as they waited for the tornado that had descended on their small community in Putnam County, Tenn., to finally pass.

“It just shook the house — they said it moved off the foundation,” said Mrs. Gregory, 73, as she surveyed the ruins of the house she had shared for decades with her husband.

Around them, it was much worse. At least 19 people died on Tuesday morning in Putnam County after a series of tornadoes cut a swath across the central part of Tennessee, killing at least 25 people in all. In Mrs. Gregory’s neighborhood, a mix of trailers, houses and modest apartments, the devastation was everywhere.

A few yards away, a woman was found dead outside her trailer. The woman’s husband was found hours later, buried under rubble. On the other side of Mrs. Gregory’s house, she said, the wind picked up a trailer and slammed it back down, killing a man inside.

At least 22 people were killed and about 140 buildings were destroyed after tornadoes tore across Tennessee early Tuesday. According to the Associated Press, one twister caused severe damage across a 10-mile area of downtown Nashville.
