PATTANI, THAILAND (ปัตตานี) – One afternoon in Pattani, Deep South of Thailand, we drove out to Talo Samilae Village (ตะโละสะมิแล), a small village on a peninsula. Along with walking around the local weekly market, Papa from Papa Tagu (https://goo.gl/maps/yAkfg7BdFBY9fjS17) cooked a rare and insanely delicious local duck and herb soup. Cooking and eating by the beach was an experience I’ll never forget. Amazing friends and amazing food! #Thailand #MalayFood #streetfood

First, we arrived to the village and started to walk around the market that takes places just once a week. There were clothes and daily necessities, but mainly there was food – both cooked food and raw ingredients. Much of the cooked food and snacks were Malay. I tried a few desserts, some traditional Malay desserts as well, which were excellent.

After we walked around the market for a while, I walked around with Papa to buy ingredients for a special duck soup. He bought huge quantities of chilies, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, pepper, and chilies.

The soup is Soup Dorae (ซุปตอเระ) ซุปเป็ดสมุนไพร) – a traditional Pattani food of duck boiled with a huge quantity of Thai medicinal herbs. The cooking process was amazing, and it was incredible how balanced the flavor was with how many pungent and strong spicy ingredients used. I absolutely loved it, one of my new favorite dishes. It burned your mouth and through slightly, but in an incredibly soothing way. They also cooked another local Pattani Malay food dish of squid stuffed with glutinous rice and cooked in coconut milk and palm sugar. It was a dessert – squid for dessert – and it was excellent.

An amazing day in Pattani, incredibly delicious Malay food and amazing friends! Thank you again to Papa for cooking and for arranging this outstanding meal in Pattani.

Thank you for watching and hope you’re having a fantastic day!

  2. Thanks Mark you share this video, my mouth watery look at you eating duck soup and fish with sambal. I know thai foods is really good taste, i really love it.

  3. It’s amazing to see the Malay food from South Thailand so uniquely different from the Malay food in Malaysia. Wish the borders can open quickly for us to visit.

  4. I watch this with mixed feeling, happy to see my malay muslim brothers n sisters..and cant stop wondering about their situation, Pattani was a huge kingdom before the Bangkok treaty 1909..a once very civilised nation now is losing part of their language, culture and tradition. The food can tell us about the rich culture they have

  5. How can you be so sure no one's make this dish anymore? Maybe some families like this prepare on special occasions? Good ol' style of eye catching titles Mark!!

  6. Love the place and the people… so peaceful…it reminds me to my hometown in kelantan, malaysia. Hope one day i can go there.
