Lyrics:

I had this dream where I relished the fray
And the screaming filled my head all day
It was as though I’d been spit here
Settled in, into the pocket
Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
Off the coast of France, dear
One afternoon four thousand men died in the water here
And five hundred more were thrashing madly
As parasites might in your blood
Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten and ten only
Anything that systematic would get you hated
It’s not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated
The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order
And those left in the water
Got kicked off our pant leg
And we headed for home
Then the dream ends when the phone rings
“You doing all right?”
He said, “It’s out there most days and nights
But only a fool would complain”
Anyway, Susan, if you like
Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory
As those fingernails scratching on my hull

  1. Then the dream ends when the phone rings
    "You doing all right?"
He said, "It's out there most days and nights
But only a fool would complain"

Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory
As those fingernails scratching on my hull

  2. Love the way the bass guitar sounds in this song. Amazing how a song with no chorus, no obvious hooks, and a slightly unconventional song structure can be one of the best songs ever written.

  4. I mostly liked the Hip, maybe kind of off and on, but this is a song I take to my grave. Lyrically and musically as magical and deep as the greatest songs from Neil Young, Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and many other great writers. Everything in it is submerged like a monster from the depths itching to explode. And it blasts your emotions to bits, wondering what motivated its creation, what it is really about. I have to go into recovery mode every time I hear it. A flat out masterpiece of lyrical songwriting. Still an overwhelming listen many years later.

  5. I can't understand why so many people struggle to understand the meaning of this song.

It's clearly about a partially written film script concerning a man who accepts the position of a lighthouse attendant off the coast of France during WW2 in the aftermath of a failed relationship. The part was written with Peter O'Toole in mind.

Jodie Foster was considered for the role of a field medic called 'Susan' who becomes romantically involved with the protagonist. The manuscript has the working title 'The Nurse's Patient'.

During his tenure at the lighthouse, O'Toole's character becomes involved in both the sinking of the Bismarck and the Dieppe raid.

In one powerful scene, the actor would have been called upon to fall on his knees in the mud of a bloody battlefield, painfully close his eyes and intone lugubriously "Damn you Winston Churchill. Bloody well damn you. Why, oh why for pity's sake did you order so many Canadians to their deaths?"

Following the failure of his and Susan's relationship, he grimly makes his way towards a ten man lifeboat to join the other nine occupants as Foster clings to his pant leg begging him to reconsider.

In the closing scene, it's suggested that the former lighthouse keeper and war hero has been driven to madness by his experiences, as he is last seen on the streets of New Orleans shaking a banana at passers by, trying to convince them that it's making a noise.

It's all there in the song as plain as day. I think some people don't listen closely enough.

  6. An utterly fantastic song, one of the best ever written.

Having just listened to an acoustic cover, I realised that if Nautical Disaster was played on piano, it would fit seamlessly onto the conceptual second half of Kate Bush's Hounds of Love album.

One of it's songs 'And Dream of Sheep' somehow feels like a thematic twin to Nautical Disaster. Maybe it's just me making that connection and it's a weird thing to observe.

Ostensibly, it concerns a stranded mariner fallen overboard or shipwrecked. The narrator drifts in and out of consciousness, dreams and memories. The album's entire second side, subtitled 'The Ninth Wave', relates to this subject.

As with Gord Downie's lyrics though, it's all about the subtext and the abstract poetry.

Kate is as eccentric as Gord was and insisted, at the age of 55, on being lowered into a tank of freezing water at Pinewood studios so that she could record a video for her own remake of the 1985 album track.

Those shuddering gasps aren't acted and she suffered mild hypothermia as a result of this endeavour.

Kate should perform a version of Nautical Disaster. I wonder if she and the Hip have ever been aware of each other.

  7. Few people know that there's a missing verse, discarded because it undermined the gravitas of the song.

"We made sure that on the lifeboat,
A fat man was allowed aboard,
He took up two seats, he smelled like pork rind,
But when the tins of corned beef ran out,
    He proved invaluable".

  8. BEST Canadian band EVER. both educational and awesome, only in Canada…. we miss you Gord, you kept your stick on the ice…

  9. Lived in Canada for two years. (Married a Canada girl) she is gone now and I am back in the US. This band was and is one of my favorites then and now. Good job Canada. Peace Deb. RIP Gord❤️

  10. After he says, 'nor a love of something fated,' he says, (death) The Hip needs a statue. A painting, something so we can see them forever.
