Courage and cannibalism: inside the Andes plane disaster | 7NEWS Spotlight

Spread The Viralist

On October 13, 1972, a plane carrying a rugby team from Uruguay, along with some of their friends and family and crew, was flying from Uruguay to Chile when it crashed in the peaks of the Andes mountain ranges. The survivors had only a bottle of rum and a few snacks to sustain them. After nine days, they resorted to eating the dead to stay alive. Reporter Alex Cullen spoke to some of the survivors and visited the site of the crash. This story originally aired in 2013.

  1. In Wisconsin one morning, outside was 17 below zero..that was frigging cold let me tell you..just standing outside and my skin started to hurt…these guys, yes they were all young, but 40 below or more!!!! No nothing……

  2. I am not judging them, but I could never eat my friends. I will starve to death before I do. That is just me but I understand their decision to do what they did.

  3. Here in Australia, nobody knows feet. We use metres for mountains. But he used feet expecting many of the viewers to be Americans.

  4. Having been over the sight and into the Andes, it's unbelievable that these guys survived.
Being unable to breathe at those altitudes is unbelievable to anyone that hasn't been at high altitudes. Not only that, the sun burns worse than the Aussie sun, you feel like your being cooked alive without air. Also knowing Chile, I can understand why they weren't found.

  5. People really think they were in the right to eat their friends and family in order to survive, like what. So many people were in the exact same situation as these people and none of them chose cannibalism. Just image you find out you cannot bury your loved one because someone ATE them. What they did was wrong but I do hope they find peace and forgiveness for what they did.

  6. For me the best documentary of all about the history that my compatriots lived … (With English Subtitle)
