From rescues to rescuers: Training search dogs
Spread The Viralist

It takes a special kind of dog to become an expert in the art of finding people trapped in rubble. That’s why Wilma Melville founded the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, which trains both firefighters and canines – typically, dogs that are rescues themselves – to work at the sites of natural disasters, building collapses and terror attacks, such as Ground Zero in New York City following 9/11. Correspondent Luke Burbank talks with Melville about her mission.

  1. I will definitely be sending this Foundation a donation πŸ’• ❀ Thank you Ms Wilma & your Foundation for all you do! God Bless you all! Peace, Love & Happiness from Alabama!!

  2. Thank you for telling this story. These trained dogs will be even more important in coming years if we don’t manage to keep clear-eyed thinkers in our American leadership in government, education, business, medicine … just like these dogs who already have good sniffers, kids must be prompted to use their best skills.

  3. Why aren't rescue dogs wearing boots protect their paws against Sharp objects, glass, metal. Could cut their paws. Rescuers wear protective foot wear why not the dogs??

  4. Wilma Melville on successful people:
"you can't be stopped by one or two or three or four hurdles; you can't be stopped because it's difficult; you can't be stopped because people say, 'why are you doing THAT?' you can't be stopped by anything"

thank you for this encouragement during a rough time in life

  5. Congratulations on meeting your goal! And thank you for not stopping. I agree it is pure vanity teaching a dog to pose for an audience. I don’t see anything worthwhile in it myself. It is all for the owners ego. And some of the ridiculous mames they give them is almost embarrassing. Thankfully the dogs don’t know any better.

  6. The care and concern for animals πŸ¦“ πŸ¦” πŸ¦’ is such a special job that we take for granted. It hurt 😒 me to the core to hear about the gorillas 🦍 who caught Covid the zoo I believe in California.πŸ˜«πŸ¦“πŸ™πŸ˜πŸ¦ They can’t protect themselves like we can and the woman who trains these rescue dogs πŸ• deserves praise.πŸ™πŸ™πŸ‘

  7. I was in Jefferson City, Missouri as a 4th grade chaperone for my sons trip to the capital. We went in in the morning and came out to barriers surrounding it after Oklahoma was bombed
