On the 25th of October 2016 at the Dreamworld theme park in Australia, a river rapids ride malfunctioned. The failure of a water pump precipitated a deadly accident that claimed four lives in a matter of moments – an accident which, later investigation would reveal, could have been prevented.

Imagine being crushed/ripped apart by machinery and having absolutely no control over it.. the sound of that alone is enough to make me shake
A lot of Aussies were disappointed how the park owners behaved after this,
I think to this day they spend their money elsewhere because of it
Thanks for reporting such an unexpected tragedy. Seems like this could have been avoided by a simple inspection by a certified engineer. Are these not mandated prior to start of business in the form of a operation safety license? Seems like oversight of irresponsible owners was needed.
Living in Australia, something like this was rarely heard, so when happened, our entire country was shocked of course but we all offered our support and sympathies as a nation.
3:42 that huge water tank. What could possibly go wrong…?
What a horrible story. 🥵😭🤬
ngl the gold coast theme parks are dookie. wet n wild? have fun nearly falling off slides, slipping and cracking your head open on the wet concrete that has 0 grip or falling down flights upon flights of stairs when they make you lug a 10kg raft. movieworld? the most underwhelming experience you'd ever have at a theme park (other than the superman roller coaster that shit was dope) execpt that one time i went on the batman thing and after i got off i realised the seatbelt thing literally couldnt go in properly and i survived getting launched 20m in the air out of pure dumb luck. why am i reviewing GC theme parks? no idea. my point is that dont be suprised when shit will go wrong at these places in queensland.
So sad, every business takes shortcuts. It's enough to never go to an amusement park
This was my favourite ride growing up such a sad and horrible tragedy this was
This was by far my favourite ride when I was little. I loved watching the scary pirates in the unnervingly dark cave yell at each other and how the water pushed me around on the boat while I got I got soaked. One of the few memories I have of my Dad was on this ride. I just learned today that this all happened on the very same thing that killed 4 people. Insane.
This channel is well done and definitely interesting but honestly I think I'm not going to be watching much more of this kind of stuff. all yesterday I watched videos about catastrophes like the Sewol and then ended on this video. This one is just too much. This stuff is so disturbing and upsetting and it has really had a bad effect on me. I actually really regret watching this content but I'm glad it exists to inform us on the harsh truths about this world we live in. It's just hard to make sense of it.
As soon as one out of two pumps failed, all they had to do was press a button. This was a total stuff-up. Needless wasted of life
Must of been on this ride over a dozen times all those years ago.. pretty eerie to think about.
I went on that ride
So, only the kids were smart. Either that or the adults purposely wanted to flip off to try and get lawsuit money…..they did get it but won't be spending it.
Horrific
thats why you go movieworld lads
People just stick to Disneyland
Who else is scared that they went on this before
“Yes but regulations are bad” most libertarians.
So sad, especially when this came about because a big company wanted to save a few dollars.
It cost 4 people their lives when companies think "It will never happen" instead of what is the worst that could go wrong.
An update, they ended up building a new rollercoaster on the scene.
I live near Dreamworld and have ridden this ride more times to count over the many years I've gone to Dreamworld. This accident was horrific. I will and have never gone back out of respect for the victims.
4 people killed and nobody goes to prison. They just agree to pay a fine but then never pay it while they appeal the settlement for the next few decades.
Nothing is a 100% safe…
When I was a kid visiting Liberty Land in Memphis TN I had a horrifying experience. Mind you the park no longer exists but at the time Libertyland was a landmark. Home of Elvises favorite roller coster. I loved the place until this experience which I still haven't overcome. The day in question I got on the parks biggest coster the "Revolution" a ride I was honestly fearful of. When I was convinced to ride and was strapped in the attendant didn't latch my shoulder harness correctly. While on the initial clime the harness opened and went all the way over my head and there was no way to reach it sitting down. I was a child after all. I screamed along with my cousin but no one operating the ride could hear us. I went through the entire ride only held in my seat by inertia! Needless to say I was lucky and I don't care to much for loop costers.
I can’t even imagine what those paramedics saw when they had to get those bodies out. No wonder they need counseling!!😱
What a way to go
Went on the same ride a couple years before this happened
Is it me or did the music disappear??? I was binge watching some of these videos and now I can’t hear any music , I even went back to another video I watched earlier where there was music and now it’s gone?
cost cutting cost lives, its the same story over and over with stuff like this. They could have had things like water level sensors but decided not to, Probably could have had a system to make sure a raft had cleared the exit of the lift hill too before the next got to the top and if not the ride shuts down.
This channel is great at showing just how dangerous ignorance, complacency, and taking shortcuts is.
I’ve heard there was lots of blood and ripped apart body parts
I’m impressed they closed the park for a whole month out of respect. Here in America it would be business as usual in a few hours 🙄🙄
Who else is going in a dream world school trip in 5 days woooooo
It’s like the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
I will never forget sitting directly across from my parents on one these and watching a goddamn tsunami come over their heads and completely soaking them head-to-toe. We still laugh about it 20 years later.
It’s truly unfortunate what happened here. A real tragedy.
They put a girl on the E-Stop button duty
i visited dreamworld eairlier this year and as you walk past it you just get a eary feeling and it is not a good feeling a basicly ran past it becuase i didnt like the way that area made me feel.
Luke Dorcet and his partner….well, that sucked, didn't it?
Did the families ever get compensation from Dreamworld ? Did they have to sue Dreamworld ? This was a horrible "accident" which demanded that big compensation be paid.
There's a ride exactly like this at Seaworld in California. If I ever return, I'll be very reluctant to go on the ride…..
Why the hell didnt they turn off the conveyor when they saw the boat stranded? Then when that collision was imminent people must have been screaming and your telling me no one in the station right by there had zero training or knowledge of how to turn it off or what to do? What a joke
i was on that same ride 2 weeks before damn
This makes me slightly uncomfortable because I'm up here in northern Queensland. I was originally planning to go here sometime in the Christmas holidays but I was reminded of this so yeah nah.
I don't trust amusement parks because I figure that they're quite possibly poorly run and maintained to save money. You don't think about that as a kid, but as I've grown older, that's the attitude I've taken.
Just from reading the comments this seems like an episode I won't be able to handle watching
