Rai, known locally as Typhoon Odette, made initial landfall on the Eastern islands of The Philippines on the morning of December 16th. Wind speeds of 300 km/h were measured, as the intensity of the storm accelerated.

Over 100,000 residents were evacuated from their homes as the typhoon approached, with fears that millions of people will be impacted by the storm.
The impact of the storm has already caused flash floods in coastal areas, with emergency services helping rescue affected citizens. Rivers and sewers overflowed, raising the risk of disease due to contaminated water.
The storm is one of the world’s strongest this year. 8 regions of the country have been placed on the highest alert level ahead of being hit by the storm. Work and education has been suspended, with citizens advised to stay in their homes until the typhoon passes.
