They basically stole some homeless guys dog while he was out Scavenging food for the both of them he was down on his luck and the love of his dog is the only thing that kept him going

Something just doesn't add up with this story.. I wonder if the dog was owned by a homeless person? If a homeless person was squatting in the building that would explain how the dog got inside. His owner may have been unable to return for some reason or the rescuers came while the owner was out, or because the owner was squatting in the school that is misdemeanor criminal trespassing/felony B&E (depending on police discretion), so if the owner was there they may have even been hiding in the school somewhere. This is just speculation but that makes more sense to me than the dog somehow getting himself inside, or even being dumped there.
