Hi All,
Short video today showing glider flying into the clouds.
One of the most common reason of incidents and accidents in General Aviation is flight into IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) by either non trained pilot or with inappropriately equipped airplane.
Of course in this case I am not judging pilot skills or training level but in this particular glider there is no artificial horizon nor turn indicator, which makes it impossible to control the airplane horizontally without reference to ground (or at least tops of clouds). Unintentional (or unfortunately intentional) flights into IMC in most cases lead to CFIT due to loss of spatial orientation or airplane disintegration in flight due to excessive speed or G-forces.
Fly Safe!

Did he got it?
At 1:28 I would have gone towards right and then broken completely out of the clouds. Then landed somewhere safe and would have started to look for new instructor. (And yes, I am not a pilot but I have learned enough from the internet to know that you don't go in to the clouds without been IMC capable (both the plane and you).)
So nearly Darwin award winners.
I think he has control
Well you wouldn't even do that in a car
An artificial horizon would have allowed to avoid such thing 🤔
glad they lived
All he had to say to me was "I have control" once… i would be so relieved.. please take control
Scary stuff… They got super lucky. Are there no attitude indicators on gliders?
my heart just stopped for them😳😳😂
For anyone as confused as me, here is the meaning of vmc and imc.
When conducting flights, it is important for a pilot to understand what VMC and IMC conditions are, as well as their differences. VMC stands for “visual meteorological conditions”, while IMC is “instrument meteorological conditions”. … The factors that affect VMC include visibility, cloud ceilings, and cloud clearances.
Watching the Altimiter during the descent is horrifying. Also feel bad for the instructor when he says "we're in trouble mate" you can tell he feels helpless as he knows a split second makes all the difference and his life is now in the students hands (who happens to have just flown into clouds without instruments).
All I would've needed to hear in wx breif was "Airmet Sierra" and I would nope tf out of flying that day 🤔
There is a video, called 178 seconds to live – which is used as training material.
This video is perfect to show, that 178 seconds its just an average. Sometimes you have much less!
Are they blind? Even we all could see they were headed straight for a mountain. Stupid. Then they’re fighting over controls. Wow. Neither should fly ever again
Watching that ASI and Altimeter jump around was frightening.
What’s imc?
They clouds ☁️ though 😆 Jesus this gave me anxiety lol
Scary!!!
The single biggest question here is why the hell, after doing something as dumb as they did, would you post the video in a public place?
once that variometer indicated a sudden "steep" descent I hope they knew they were on the wrong side of the mountain
I repeat, that is the drug.
ho ho ho ho..death on a stick there..i remember reading if you fly into bad weather fly back to where you came from becaus its air you know..wow lucky boys.experianced pilots now..
I’ve never understood why they don’t include artificial horizons while building gliders….can anybody tell me why they don’t include those in gliders??
I have control 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very smart, congratulations 👏
Bet you needed a new pair of underwear after that eh? Jeez that was close. Poor decision perhaps but excelent recovery. Thanks for posting.
I don't understand how they didn't crash.
"I have control" —-well hmmm
Honestly, how stupid one should be to deliberately fly so close and then into (!) the clouds with a glider, which is absolutely not suitable for instrument flying? You don't even have an artificial horizon for Christ's sake!
Doing everything possible to kill yourself for 10 ministers and then surviving. Lol.
It wasn’t unintentional, it was just more convenient to go imc for what they thought would be an inconsequential couple of mins, they almost paid with their lives. I cannot overstate how dangerous it is to go imc in a glider over mountains with no attitude indicator. I wouldn’t do this in a powered plane with and AI. I can’t believe it. Shocking. How were those clouds not massive warning signs before it was too late??
It’s bad when student takes control from instructor

"We're in trouble mate"
Maybe they should invest in an artificial horizon?.
you are not Almost Crash you are almost die
I am not a pilot but that glider experienced some high Gs in that turn I guess
Glider CFI explains exactly what happened in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpyqiAp2TFY&t=2s
When they had a gap in between the clouds, why did they choose to go into the clouds?
Weather + stubbornness = disaster
You were poking the bear on that; you almost died.
Did they actually hit treetops around 3:00 or what was the it?
Just curious, does some gliders not have the attitude indicator?
Amazing chilling video, happens soooo fast, wow, thx
"I have control"
do you really?
I'd have No Control! in that situation, perhaps. Oh dear. But thanks for sharing.
2:31 Even the vario sounds sad he's flying in cloud.
you two should go buy some lottery tickets… that was your lucky day. Lucky to be alive.
I would vote to withdraw the instructor's license. He will kill himself and a student one day. This is insanity.
As a student pilot, especially at this young age, it is not easy to stand up against your instructor, but in this very case, I would have. I have even told our chief instructor once, very respectfully, that I didn't want him to do low passes with me again, after our wingtip very nearly hit the ground at pullup. He totally understood and apologized. But it was hard for me to convey that message. The adrenaline sure helped 🙂
