This considerate diving instructor helps a struggling stingray who was found flipped upside down. Mette Ellis Gaardsted Nussbaumer, 37, was out on a dive with two guests near Dhigurah Island in South Ari Atoll, the Maldives looking for some whale sharks when she noticed a white shape on the ocean floor. She asked her guests to wait and swam down to investigate, where she realised it was a large female stingray. Seeing the mouth moving, she knew the stingray was still alive and decided to try and safely flip it over. Mette said: “I wanted to help it – I love the ocean and I know that sharks and rays go into the dosed stage when they are placed upside down.” As soon as she successfully helped the stingray get back on its way, she checked on her guests who were applauding her good deed. “She was not fighting me and I made sure to stay clear of the tail where the stinger is placed. A marine biologist friend of mine was on our boat that day and she told us the ray would probably have died if I hadn’t flipped it back over, which made me feel like I did the right thing.”
