Fishing line is very dangerous and often has fatal consequences for wildlife like ducks, shorebirds and even the mighty merganser. Please join me as I walk along the river and hear a frightened squawk from a small island in the water. Upon investigation, I discover a merganser that has become entangled in a very fine fishing line and had it’s neck severely constricted with many coils of tight fishing line as well as its little webbed feet and wings tangled up. I took off my boots, rolled up my pants legs and waded to its rescue. Although it vomited water at one point, upon its release he gave me one mighty squawk in appreciation for my timely help and then disappeared over a small waterfall downriver.
