This is Russ, as I sat in the hospital for a couple days, I replayed everything in my head hundreds of times, things that I should have noticed as a warning, and what I could have done differently.
I’ve seen lots of comments so I’ll address a few of them, not being defensive at all.
In a normal car throttle sticking at 2200 RPM’s is not the end of the world, in my car that’s 900 ft/lbs of torque. I should have realized the load that was putting on the brakes. Didn’t cross my mind at the time. FYI: It had double springs on the throttle.
In a normal car, I could have pulled emergency brake, I even got a quote at Good Guy’s Del Mar for an electronic e-brake & bigger brakes. Hindsight’s 20-20, I was just gonna trailer it to a few shows & not drive it much till I could do that.
Why didn’t I downshift? Car had a B&M ratchet shifter, once I shifted up thru the gears you can’t downshift till you put it in park. So much going on in those last few seconds, forgot to downshift it after putting it in park, but it was probably too late to have had a big reduction in speed.
As far as I know, driver of van was not seriously injured. Beauty of a modern car with crumple zones, self tightening seat belts & air bags.
Car had liability coverage but no collision, I was still in the process of getting stated value insurance

You drove around an unsafe car that probably shouldn't be on the street in the first place, with neglected brakes, knowingly, for youtube clout. I have zero sympathy for you and only hope that the innocent people you hit suffered less pain than you did, because yours was entirely self-inflicted. Move on, cars as a hobby are not for you. As I seen him hit the dash that hard I just noticed something he had no seatbelt on or the other person who is driving it and second this is a legal

What did you think would happen? The driver knew it was unsafe. Lousy build details. Hanging throttle, obviously lousy brakes for whatever reason. And the driver stabs it before an intersection. After the car is screaming at him that things ain’t kosher. No amount of Simpson harness is going to fix irresponsible behavior. We are all lucky you two didn’t kill a kid or yourselves. Sorry for your injuries, but that operator is to blame 100% and it would be to our collective benefit that he never drives, and more so, builds anything, ever again. I just cant find any mercy for this level of dangerous disregard for public safety.

I do pretty dumb and dangerous shit here and there but Jesus Christ this was 100% avoidable at multiple instances. I hope he doesn’t rebuild that car, because somebody that ignores that many red flags, in a high hp car, and drove straight into the back of a family vehicle clearly cannot handle it, on public roads at that. I’m 20 years old and know better to respect a car and what it’s capable of. Then to make it worse…not one damn mention of the people minding their damn business and was down a car in the family.
My dad and i also had a wreck like this, to no fault but our own. It shows the flaws in older technology and wear and tear as well. We was in a 91 chevy truck and a car ran out in front of us. Breaks locked up, and no where to go. Truely a horrible experience to see something beautiful that youve invested time into and money, no longer functional. Luckily we was able to slow down and swerve enough to keep from injuring someone, and everyone was good. Glad everyone involved into this situation was okay and everything is good. Hope yall continue doing what yall are doing, even though there is a ton of hate that came specifically from this scenario. Glad you learned from it as well.
Every single person watching this video and reading these comments, without exception, has lived through and event where, if we had a time machine, would go back and immediately rectify our screw ups. Regretfully, however, there is no such thing as a time machine. A smart man (and woman) learns from his or her mistakes. A WISE man or woman learns from the mistakes of others. For what it's worth.

I like your showing people what can happen when your not thinking I guess. That said WTF????? How can you put this video on with no information on the family that could have been murdered. Brakes fail and he picked a mini van to slam into? I watched the video because all I wanted to know is how are the people that got hit. If I got hit over something so reckless and irresponsible I would demand the court has his car crushed. Your video is as reckless and irresponsible as the two dumb dumbs in the POS Comet.

1 Shut off your engine.
2 shift to the 1st gear or change to reverse gear. ( Break your gear box and stop your car )
3 use your hand brakes.
It looks like you are learning to drive.
