9. The number of humans on the planet has a direct correlation to the following downstream concerns:

   – accelerated climate change
   
   – habitat loss of other species
   
   – decreasing biodiversity
   
   – dwindling fresh water supplies (including underground aquifers)
   
   – the cruelty of large scale factory farming
   
   – over fishing
   
   – fracking
   
   – nuclear waste
   
   – acidification and pollution of our oceans
   
   – oil exploration in sensitive habitats
   
   – depletion of minerals, etc.,

   Using numerical extremes, solely to illustrate the point, imagine a world with a human population of only 1 million humans. The downstream problems reduce significantly. Some of them disappear completely. Now imagine a world with 10 billion humans. Those same downstream problems become amplified. Future generations will likely wonder why we could not see the correlation.

   Solving the global population issue is a hard problem so we focus on the downstream problems, especially when there is financial profit to be made. The benefits of trillion dollar economic stimulus packages can all be overwhelmed as more and more humans are added to the planet. Even if all 10 billion people have solar panels on their roofs and drive electric cars, the world will still suffer the problems in the list of downstream concerns.

   Whether or not the solution(s) sounds like eugenics, depends on the solutions we come up with. For example:

   We can start by phasing out programs that reward people to have more children, perhaps by capping the number of allowable child tax credits and telling the public that our population has become a problem. Uncapped child tax credits, as they exist today, are also a form of eugenics, according to some, by favoring people who have lots of children. I am not completely against child tax credits. They serve a good purpose for children. And capping child tax credits is just one proposed solution.

   We are living in one of the best times in human history! While things are no longer as good as pre-pandemic, they are still pretty good compared to 200 years ago. We have electrity, automobiles, computers, information at our fingertips, a variety of food that was not even available to kings and queens 200 years ago, the ability to travel the globe on jet airplanes, the ability to watch nature documentaries showcasing the amazing biodiversity of our planets , the ability to view our own planet from distant points in our solar system, the ability to send probes to other planets in our solar system and to use space-based telescopes to peer at amazing formations in the universe. Unfortunately, not all of us are living such a nice life. Our current trajectory of population growth steers us not to a sudden, horrendous apocalypse but instead to a slow, painful decline. We can leave a better world than that to future generations

   We need to be bold and address the root cause shared by all of the downstream problems. We need more media coverage so everyone hears the message. We can start by phasing out programs that reward people to have more children (eg, phase out child tax credits and/or cap # credits that can be claimed). Instead of world leaders being ask to commit to carbon goals, they should convene to discuss and set goals for gradual reduction of the human population. We need our best minds focused on the core problem. With fewer people on the planet, the downstream problems reduce by themselves.

   Lower fertility leads also to ageing populations. Current practice is to increase immigration and fertility to create more young people to look after the old as well as to replace them in the workforce. Future policy will need to be willing to accept some level of economic decline in favor of overall benefit to humanity. Declining populations and economies should be managed so they happen gradually. It will not be easy, but is necessary if we do not want Mother Nature to manage our population for us
