For #6, it's no surprise that the fish wouldn't take being launched into space very well. Just shooting a bullet into water is enough to kill nearby fish from just the shockwave, as the Mythbusters call it the Fish-In-A-Barrel Effect. (That was named for the episode in which they tested the idiom "Easy as shooting fish in a barrel." Don't worry, they didn't use any living fish, they used data known from fish biology and experiments in the past to determine the legitimacy of that idiom. You don't have to actually hit fish in a barrel with a bullet in order to kill them it turns out.)
Why did the French shoot a cat into Space? People had already gone to Space. Shits and giggles? They've never released an explanation.
