“In war, animals are victims too,” says Alaa Aljaleel, the cat rescuer of Idlib. In one of the last rebel strongholds of Syria’s civil war, he cares for injured and abandoned cats.

Around 400 cats live with Alaa Aljaleel in his animal shelter, and a few more drop by now and then when they’re hungry. This is not Alaa’s profession: he usually cares for people, as a paramedic. Millions of refugees live in Idlib, often just barely surviving. Not everyone takes kindly to Alaa Aljaleel’s focus on animals amid so much human suffering. “But for me,” he says “humanity also means not forgetting the animals.” A report by Omar Albam.

  1. What a great human being. He's such a rich man because his heart is full of love for god's creations. His parents can be so proud to have raised such a wonderful person, they did everything right.

  2. How does he deal with all the cats who start breeding and having kittens? He would be overwhelmed with a tsunami of kittens every heat season.

  3. This man is a rare gem. He could have fled the country but chooses to put his life at risk and rescue and help the animals (some abondoned) in his country instead. I hope he continues to be safe and continues to have support for his shelter. The best of humanity are those who care for the most vulnerable.

  4. Bless these guys and their hearts. I'm so happy someone over there does care about the animals. Cats and dogs have no consciousness and can't take care of themselves… people are conscious and can take care of themselves. That's the difference and that's why it's important to help them. I'm definitely going to look them up and make a donation. Such wonderful people, I hope they stay safe.

  5. Even though my country's situation is not as terrifying as Syria's, the situation here is pretty harsh so I understand how hard it can be to care for animals in a place when people aren't even getting their most basic needs covered, so glad to see what he's doing, I wish him the best!

  6. Why in some areas, especially in poor and underdeveloping countries animals mean only dogs and cats i really don't understand that… 🤔🤔🤔🤔
By the way very good job..👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

  7. It might be hard for many locals to understand what he is doing, but in my opinion he is right. Some humans are so reckless towards nature that others need to clean up what has been done.

  8. My utmost respect for this gentleman and his team. My family and I live in the city and can only afford to rescue 6 cats because the care (food, litter, and vet visits) can be quite expensive for middle income folks like us here in the USA. We do donate to the local animal shelter but please know that animal shelters around the country can only keep the rescues up to a certain time. Then they have to put them to sleep despite the claim that they are no kill shelters. It is not because they are cruel to animals. It is because they can only help so much. My advice is that we, pet owners, can help reduce the number of stray animals by having our pets fixed in the first place. Cat breeding should be made illegal so that people will adopt an animal rather than buy one. All of our six cats are of different breeds and we love them all the same. We used to have 7 cats. One died recently after suffering from diabetes for many months. Our heart broke to small pieces. We hope Chanel is living a healthy and happy life in cat heaven. ❤️
