Science is playing an increasingly crucial role in efforts to solve crime. Soil analyses provide information about the crime scene. Blood samples track the progression of events. Even insects can be used to calculate the time of death.
The discovery of DNA analysis heralded what has probably been the most important revolution in the history of criminal investigation. At the same time, it marked a key shift in law enforcement’s approach: before long, it became clear that in addition to police and public prosecutors, an additional group of professionals would be needed provide decisive information in endeavors to solve crime. Namely, forensic scientists.
Lorna Dawson specializes in soil investigation. After all, the forest floor is as unique as a fingerprint. Philippe Esperanca can make even invisible blood traces visible. At the Frankfurt Institute of Legal Medicine, entomologist Jens Amendt works with flies and their larvae. Using insects found on a corpse to establish the time of death is a well-established method. But Amendt is taking it to the next level.
Omnipresent pollen can provide information as to who has been near a corpse, where a person went before their death, or at which time of year a person died. Due to the longevity of pollen grains, traces are sometimes conserved for thousands of years. This enables Martina Weber from Vienna to help in the investigation of contemporary crimes, as well as to evaluate the historic events in Pompeii.

Amazing episode, especially interesting the determination of the Pompeii eruption, the new method of spraying fir blood without destroying DNA, also interesting to see that methods used generally in one place (like the soil sampling in the UK or the non destructive spray in France) isn't always common practice in other parts🤯. Hope all these fields can be successfully integrated so as to benefit the whole field🤞. To catch all murders and stop more innocent people from being sentenced. Well done all the brilliant scientists and well done DW for bringing us all so enlightening content continuously.

Bit worried about these experts- They could be crazy psychos or government sponsored officials and get rid of anyone they like. I’d like to think at least x10 independent groups (with no contact) are carrying out their findings and presenting to an unbiased randomly picked jury of again at least x 10 people at the same time

Am a University student current in my third year persuing forensic science. Never in my life did I once think be a forensic scientist, it just didn't seem visible. I wanted to be a doctor or a pilot, but forensic science has sort of a mysterious nature that appealed to me later in life. To cut a long story short, forensic is the life for me, I think I was meant to be one. Though the conditions are not that good here in Kenya, I will keep giving it my best every other day. Hopefully, I will be able to live my dream one day.

About 1/4 homicides here in the city of Detroit are solved. It is my hope that this sort of forensic science can solve more. There are too many “perfect crimes” here. What do you do when someone becomes ash?

Only Europeans could have do so. They took criminal investigation to another level. Now forensic laboratories conduct criminal investigations. However science is not perfect.
