Yesterday we embarked on a rescue mission that was filled with danger for both us and the animals involved. However, these animals needed us or else it wouldn’t have been long before they ended up dead.
Down in Mexico we made our way on what we thought was going to be a 1 dog rescue mission. This quickly changed as we approached the drug den that, to our surprise, multiple dogs had been forced to call “home”. Nothing about this place was homey or could even be considered safe. As we mentioned, our original rescue mission was for one specific dog who we named Francis. When we entered the establishment we were met with 3 more pleading and desperate faces. Four dogs total and all of them were holding onto life by the skin of their teeth. Knowing we absolutely could not leave a single one behind we did what we had to do to bring them all back with us.
When we say that these animals were in horrible condition we don’t even think that does the severity of the situation justice. Their skin was exposed from the massive amounts of hairless they had experienced and their bones protruded from their starved little bodies. Francis has an extremely large gash that goes around his neck that is most likely from an embedded collar. The injuries are so severe our hearts shattered into pieces thinking about what they had been through. We were able to rush them out of the dark den they had known for so long and bring them to our vet’s office. Their recovery is going to be a very long journey as it will require surgeries, hospitalization, treatment for anemia and tick diseases, and slowly helping them gain some weight. This whole situation is a true tragedy but we have to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel which is that this was an amazing day for them. They will never know that kind of pain or neglect ever again.
We only expected to be taking in one dog but when 3 more needed our help we could not turn our backs. This is bringing a much larger added cost but they are worth every single penny. We hope you can support us and them throughout this lengthy healing journey.
