2012 Was a year that was defined by a number of devastating weather events, from the March 2nd Tornado Outbreak, to the Derecho in July, to a couple of hurricanes, 2012 was a year that was unforgettable in terms of significant weather events. However, one of them stands today as one of, if not the most significant event from that year. This month marks the 10 year anniversary of that event. 10 Years Ago, Superstorm Sandy, one of only two storms to receive that title officially, significantly damaged the Greater Antilles, and then slammed into the Northeastern United States, making its mark in history as the worst disaster to hit the Northeastern United States in recent memory. A storm that is unlike any other significant hurricane in the Atlantic Basin in recent memory, and a storm that I still clearly remember for it’s unique and fascinating presentation on radar and on satellite. However the complexities of Sandy are not often talked about in-depth to a point of where I’d like it to be talked about. So today, looking back 10 years ago, I take a deep dive into Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy, going over the state of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season before Sandy, Sandy’s origins, the original forecast, the effects in the Caribbean, the forecast into the United States, the path of destruction it brought to the US, and the aftermath. Welcome, to Nature’s Fury.

UPDATE: I SAID NOVEMBER INSTEAD OF OCTOBER AT SOME POINT IN THE VIDEO I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I MISSED THAT I AM DEEPLY SORRY ABOUT THAT!!!
I lived on a barrier Island in NJ during Sandy . We took some damage but were more fortunate than many others .
Great Doc! Can’t wait for you to do Katrina or Andrew
I just wanna know if the guy got his hot sandwich
Sandy took lives, respects for that. although she wasn't even a hurricane when she came ashore. coastal southerners laugh at this. after you go through a cat 4 It's almost an insult to mention Sandy. Andrew(4) Katrina(1) Wilma(2) Irma(2), them are the storms I been through. i live in a little town called Miami. The capitol of this country is Tallahassee. Floridians do not identify with the rest of the continent USA. floridians identify with other floridians. You must be born in Florida or have children that were born in Florida to be considered native. If you ain't born in Florida you will always be looked at like a visitor, even if you own property in FL. you must be born in FL to claim native status.
the YouTube algorithm is in your favour, liked and subscribed. Good effort 👍 I'm sorry to hear about your grandpa hopefully this video brings you some success. Once you felt ready something like this about Katrina or other big storms etc would be very interesting to watch, horrible however it is fascinating to see how humans can come together too help one another.
crazy how a decade later, another major hurricane hits almost the same spots. (from the middle of the atlantic to north carolina)
I was 12 at the time, and live on Long Island. I, in my infinite wisdom, went outside with an umbrella. When I tried to jump, I did indeed get more air. The wind gusts sounded terrifying
"because 2011" made me laugh
My worst storm nightmare in history. I was in Sandy in NJ, it was horrible
You do stupendous work. I learned a lot more about this storm. And I share in that love and longing with you, for me over my dad, he is sorely missed but I know they are in good hands, God bless you!
Was caught off by the Xenoblade music, thinking I clicked on a game retrospective accidentally. Good choice for a heartfelt moment. Your loss is felt
All of the terrifying weather events of the 2011 and 2012 must've sent conspiracy theorists into a mad panic considering so many thought the world was gonna end in 2012.
Living in Southern Maryland only a handful of minutes from the Chesapeake (Mechanicsville), it's interesting to see the differences in experience I had between Irene and Sandy. Irene was much, much worse than Sandy. During Irene, power went out for over a week at my house and some light flooding in the basement that didn't do a whole lot of damage outside of having to clean the carpets. Sandy on the other hand felt more of your average Southern Maryland heavy rainstorm. Worst that happened was the power flickering a couple times… definitely not as bad as WJLA (ABC's news station for Washington DC) made it out to be.
I lived on the Jersey Shore. I worked as a ride operator on the iconic roller coaster that the ocean swallowed. We didn’t evacuate, we lost power and had candles on in the house. We lived across the street from a large bay. I noticed the street getting flooded, but at first I thought it was from the rain. Within minutes, the water was rapidly increasing and up to our garage. My dad was at work, so I had to evacuate my mom and dogs in my SUV upland to my aunts house. When we arrived, we weren’t sure if we blew out the candles. So I decided to go back to check, and by the time I got back, the water was up to the door handles of the SUV. I got to the house and the candles were out. And I managed to swim my way back to the SUV, and drive the thing back to my aunts. Didn’t even realize how dangerous what I did was. I have no idea how I didn’t lose control of the vehicle. It was a 1999 Chevy Blazer. Thing was a beast. I remember people in my neighborhood that were stranded in their homes had to be evacuated by boat. I’ll never forget the post-apocalyptic nature of October 30 before the water fully receded. It was like from a movie, down power lines in the flooded streets, debris everywhere. I wish I got footage, but alas I didn’t.
I was a sophomore and lived on campus at Monmouth University during Sandy and had to evacuate. When I came back the came us was virtually untouched but the Surrounding towns were totally demolished. Horrible horrible scene.
My first video I’ve seen from this channel and I shall award you with the best honors I can bestow, a subscription. I am proud of you.
The praise and affirmation you received from your Grandpa before his passing is worth far more than anything I or anyone else on here can say. Your skills in narration and video production are amazing. Condolences to you and your family….. you made me tear up when you got emotional at the end.
I was living in Jamaica when Hurricane Sandy at the time made landfall. I had no idea that Sandy did that much damage. God, I'm glad I was spared the absolute worst of the superstorm, but It's horrifying what damage the storm unleashed on the northeast coast. Wow. Massive condolences for you loss as well. I lost both grandmothers, and a grandfther before I was born. I miss my grandma. I was close with her. I'm almost feeling emotional to the point of tears when you described what it was like to see him on the hospital/death bed. That was what it was like for me as well, seeing her feeble life wither away. I remember crying at the funeral and one of the songs that was sung there is stuck in my head.
I'm sorry about your grandfather. ):
These are awesome! Do you include a Doppler radar history of the storm?
This was a very well put together video. I'm sure your grandfather would've loved it had he lived to see it.
As someone who has lost multiple grandparents over the last decade, I can understand what it's like to lose someone close to you. And I'm glad you're finding a way to soldier on despite the loss.
And a damn good meteorologist you are, thank you for what you do.
I remember losing my grandfather back on Election Day of 2016 when I was just 11 and even though he could not tell me he wanted me to be a meteorologist , I am sure he wanted me to be a meteorologist , I was fascinated with weather at the time and I still am , I am going to graduate High School this year and hopefully become a meteorologist , I have dedicated most of my life to learning and studying weather , it’s fascinating to do my job
can we for the sake of people's sanity deploy the national guards to the storm location to prep for looters. IF i was the woman, I too would have made the same decision. This is so depressing for people who make calculated decisions based on <1% of the people targeting their properity.
I am so sorry for your lost. Your grandfather will always live and walk beside you for so long as his memory lives in your heart.
Another fantastic video
You're so congested I had to lay down after I watched this. Good video though.
It's interesting to see the circles of noise around each radar site across the nation.
Makes it easier to understand radar "holes" and the difficulty of tracking certain weather patterns when storms aren't in the right spot
As someone who witness this all as a kid, sandy was the worst hurricane i've been in. There were fires and floods that destroyed my whole hometown, and it had to force me, my parents, and my cat to all move. It ruined the whole halloween of 2012. And im really surprised to see it turning 10. Hope everyone else who witnessed sandy is all alright after 10 years. [EDIT] I was also in queens when this storm happend. Im still in queens but moved to a different area.
I love the video but you keep referring to New Jersey and New York as New England. The North East and New England are not the same. New England is Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
Can you do a video on the 1993 storm of the century? You've piqued my interest
Weather sucks.
