This is Why I Quit Van Life (it's been a total disaster!)

Spread The Viralist

Sorry for the long absence but I have quit van life and this is the story behind why I stopped posting YouTube videos and why I prematurely quit even though my plan was to travel for an entire year. Thanks for being a fan and thank you for sticking around! Rambo and I love you all!

  1. My ex wanted to do van life for the longest time until one day I came home and saw a van in our driveway. She had quit her extremely well paying nursing job to pursue whatever it was she was looking for. I tried to explain several of these points you made to her, but she ignored me. Needless to say she ran out of money and was back home, calling me after about 8 months.

  2. Thank you for your honesty. I watch a lot of glowing vids on how wonderful it is to live out of a vehicle. Well, not for me. I love a home. I love being able to go to MY own bathroom, with permanent plumbing connections. I can see myself investing in a camper to travel in, but not live permanently in.

  3. For anyone considering van life, from my experience of 4 years travelling in Europe. Firstly it's not a religion, nothing to prove.
I have a small home now but haven't given up vanning. I go back home if I want. I did it originally as I couldn't afford rent on my fixed income. I promised myself I woul always have a roof over me. The best is not to move all the time. Stop in one place for weeks if you can, much less stressful. Eventually you make a few friends in different places if you stop longer. Have a hobby, I paint when I travel, some surf or hike. Sitting all day in a van is not necessary.

  4. 1st time catching your video. I like your setup. I watch a lot of van dwellers. But they are all on the bottom of YouTube. Lol I am happy for your move to an apartment. That’s gotta feel great.

  5. Had a buddy, Robert "Skippy" Bellous who lived van life after his apartment building was condemned. He survived 3 years, until the police found d his frozen body in the winter of 83.

  6. I find it fascinating that in 2020, people starting trying to convince themselves & others, that living in a car, van, truck, RV, was okay…but it's really not okay. It's not cool anymore. Really tired of seeing all the youtube channels & videos of people living/camping/glamping in their vehicles. I lived in my car for over 4 years and never tried to glamorize, romanticize, or try to monetize with videos of that incredibly low moment in my life.
I know housing is unaffordable, and with the rising costs in everything, I'm afraid that more people will be forced into this way of life.
You're always trying to find a place to park, poop & shower (if u dont have gym pass), always kinda scary, isolated & lonely (unless w/partner or dog), maintenance & gas for vehicle, stable source of income while being mobile, it's never easy…unless your monetizing your life living in a vehicle.
Good luck with those gas prices$$$ all you gypsies!

  7. It's good to see videos like this. A lot of vloggers seem to not want to show the bad parts about van life simply because they think it won't attract viewers who want to be tantalized by all the happy moments.

  8. I couldn’t imagine myself living in a van for a long period of time. I’ve always dreamt of living in my RV and to travel throughout the US for a year or so. But whenever we go on a trip we get tired of it after a week or two. Whenever we get home we’re all so relieved. Our RV is fully contained but we still get too cooped up in it after a week.

  9. Why do you live in San Diego I live in Tijuana I would never live in San Diego I cross the border everyday for work my rent is only $350 San Diego you're paying minimum $2,000 for rent you should consider moving to Mexico since your business is overseas and you can pretty much work from home

  10. i knew a van lifer. he had it all going for him and thought he would try and new way of living . he lost IT ALL over a span of 5 years. he's homeless now 🙁

really sad too. he's a wholesome guy

  11. Suck to see ya go! I'm starting a Trailblazer SUV build right now and can't wait for the Van Life experience. You could have planned your itinerary differently. And, for God's sake, get some windows in that thing.. 🙂

  12. Truth is that only 1% of men can make it on these trendy social media lifestyle channels while at least 50% of young beautiful sexy women willing to show a lot of cleavage and sometimes more will be able to make a decent living posting videos. The odds go way up when two women combine to build something while showing 80% of their bodies to draw views. Sexuality sells and even if she is ridiculous and not very imaginative the potential audience is roughly four billion people if you discount China and other associated closed cultures.

  13. I agree 👍 with you 100 %., I grew up on travel from one island to another. When I was 13 already a 1st year highschool, my parents sent me away for boarding house to better school then college.
I promised myself I want to stay in one big house not moving anywhere until I grow old. That's where I am at, I always appreciate to be home in my home 🏠 in country side .(Marilyn 🇺🇲).

  14. I'm sure you're not looking for notes but I think you went to cheap on the front end.
Having to find bathrooms etc would get arduous. Moving around (constantly) is due to not being able to drop n prop for a week or so.
Anyway, I'm sure you had fun and learnt a lot👍

  15. your just being honest.i prefer to live in my cottage.ive had a holiday in a van life experiance, and couldnt wait to get home.good luck with future.

  16. I did the same as you! I lived in a trailer for 3 years but l work camped. I worked at ski resorts and campgrounds. I got tired of relocating every 4-6 months, so l sold my trailer, got a full time job near my kids and am now back in an apartment enjoying the “little” things like running water, internet, a big refrigerator, a 50” TV. After selling all my stuff in 2016 l had to buy it all again!

I like my apartment and my full time job but l miss the freedom and flexibility of seasonal work and really traveling. Weekend camping trips aren’t doing it for me . As much as l appreciate the comforts of a “real” home l am actually working and saving to buy yet another trailer so l can head back out on the road when l can retire in a few years. I just put a deposit on an off road trailer that will be ready in 2024 and keep going back and forth about waiting another year until retirement or going back to work camping.

It’s a constant back and forth for me because part of me loves the security and creature comforts of stick and bricks living but the other part wants to go go go and does go wherever possible. I also don’t relish the thought of having to sell/get rid of all my stuff again and of saying goodbye to my daughter (although she may very well leave as well!)

If l could afford it, l would have a “home base” to come back to and rejuvenate but that’s not something l can afford. The idea of staying in one place though scares me. There is so much l want to do and see and you don’t live forever.

But for many people traveling is a pain and inconvenience and they appreciate and love being “home.” That is fine too but l have never been that person! I’ve always wanted to explore and travel. If anything, coming back to an apartment to live has reinforced my desire to travel. So it goes both ways.

Everyone’s journey and destination is a personal and different one. Good luck and enjoy the ride regardless.

  17. If you had gotten out of the city and actually camped places you might have felt differently. I could never do what you did but I slept in my Jeep and a tent for 6 months and then got a small trailer and loved it.

You can camp for up to 2 weeks on federal land and for months in some places. You are right that constantly moving is a pain and stressful but it doesn’t have to be that way
