  1. About 2 years aog Jay Bouwmeester with the St. Louis Blues got off the ice and collapsed on the bench. His heart just stopped. After CPR and the defibrillator his heart restarted and he ended up having to retire because of it. They stopped the game and everything. Clint Malarchuk with the Buffalo Sabers was sliced on the neck and blood poured out all over the ice and they got most of it on video. He ended up being fine but it was a scary clip to watch.

  2. the Ryan Johnson injury, his fingers crimpingt like that is a neorilogical responce to head trauma. imediate concussion protocol.

  3. Remember the Zednik one when it happened, remember my parents saying it "reminded them of the malarchuck incident". Buffalo fans have seen it more than once thats for sure.

  4. The incident where the player blew a tire and went head first into the boards is an example of why they changed to icing rules. It used to be that if the icing team touched the puck first, there was no icing, so players would skate full speed trying to beat each other to the puck. Icing wasn't called until someone touched the puck, meaning that players were often at full speed when they crossed the goal line. Now, of course, the linesman makes a call deciding how he thinks would make it first, and calls icing on that, so players aren't skating full speed and knocking themselves out.

  5. If I recall correctly, in the first clip, Pronger's heart skipped a beat due to the puck hitting him in the chest, hence the delayed fainting reaction.

One of the more recent scary incidents was Jay Bouwmeester having a heart attack on the bench and having CPR administered. He had to retire due to a heart condition and a pacemaker was implanted. Very similar to Christian Eriksen in the Euros.

I'd also say Zdeno Chara hitting Pax Pacioretty into the stanchions next to the benches could have been life-threatening, since he suffered several broken vertebrae. Could have been paralysis or worse.

  6. How in the the heck do they not have Clint Malarchuk on there? The only way he survived was because the trainer was a combat medic from Vietnam. A liter and a half of blood, 300 stitches and two fans had flippin heart attacks in the stands
Poor guy ended up with PTSD, OCD that compounded into alcoholism and a suicide attempt. Now he and his wife speak on mental health, trauma etc

  7. Not-so-fun facts:

The NHL annually awards the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. Bill Masterton is the only NHL player to die as a direct result of injuries suffered on ice, when he fell to the ice and cracked his skull (during an era when players didn't wear helmets)

The reason NHL arenas now all have nets above the glass in each end is due to the death of Brittanie Cecil, the first and only fan fatality at an NHL game. During a game in 2002 in Columbus Ohio, a slapshot by the Blue Jackets' Espen Knutson was deflected into the stands by the Calgary Flames' defender Derek Morris. At the time the injury did not appear serious and the game continued – but Brittanie died two days later, just shy of her 14th birthday. Both the Flames and Blue Jackets wore armbands for the rest of the season to honour Brittanie.
