Keith Huewen: Phillip Island defining moment in MotoGP title battle

Fabio Quartararo vs Francesco Bagnaia vs Aleix Espargaro – plus Enea Bastianini and Jack Miller? This week’s Crash.net MotoGP podcast featuring Keith Huewen dives into MotoGP’s volatile title fight heading into the fabulous but unforgiving Phillip Island.

After a wet weather nightmare in Buriram, Yamaha’s reigning champion Quartararo takes a flimsy two-point lead over Ducati’s Bagnaia into the much-anticipated first Australian round since 2019.

Aprilia’s Espargaro is also back within 20-points of the top but outscoring them all over the last three rounds have been Bastianini and Miller. Bastianini has claimed 42 out of a possible 75 points with newly married home Phillip Island star Miller the man of the moment with 56.

The pair remain fourth (-39 points, Bastianini) and fifth (-40, Miller) in the standings with three rounds remaining. But Miller has outscored Quartararo by more than his current deficit (48 points) in the last three roller-coaster events at Aragon, Motegi and Buriram.

“Phillip Island has got a lot of things that are going to be chucked at these guys,” said former Grand Prix rider and British champion Keith Huewen.

“I think Phillip Island is the turning point. The defining moment for the world championship where there’s going to be big points to grab and big mistakes that can be made.”

Crash.net MotoGP editor Peter McLaren believes that Phillip Island could be crucial to Quartararo’s chances.

“If you look at these last three tracks, really Phillip Island is Quartararo’s best chance to take points off Bagnaia. Sepang they’re probably roughly equal, you might say, and might be the best opportunity to see Quartararo, Bagnaia and Espargaro all fighting at the front since they’ve tested there and have looked competitive in the past.

“But Valencia last year was an all-Ducati front row and all-Ducati podium! You wouldn’t want to be Quartararo going into that final race with a points gap to try and close.

“So really Quartararo’s got to get some points over Bagnaia this weekend to try and build some breathing room, with Aleix as the dark horse on a track where the RS-GP led a race for the first time in the hands of Andrea Iannone last time MotoGP was there in 2019.

“Potentially it’s another massive weekend for the title and weather wise I think it’s looking like showers on Friday, then okay on Saturday and Sunday, but quite cool. So tricky conditions as ever at Phillip Island!”

  1. Nobody seems to have noticed or atleast I haven't heard it come up, I think that Aleix Espargaró has struggled ever since he had that sizable crash over in Silverstone? Pretty sure it was Silverstone but anyway, ya I think it legitimately shook him up.He can say no but his entire demeanor has changed since then…He is two different people when you see him in the box…B4 crash

    Keith is always banging on about testing and having to set the bike spec too early in the season… with that in mind what do the guys think about the WSBK 'super concessions' that are going to be introduced and what about doing the same in MotoGP for a move to BOP rules ?

  3. I think Miller will podium on Sepang – after the fiasco in Australia he has a point to prove; he also wants 3rd place in the championship. And it might be raining ……….. He won't mess up Bagnia but that apart he will be up for it.

  4. Another point from Phillip Island – what about Remy being the second best KTM qualifier? And he beats Raul (again) in the race. I was hoping he had a chance at an Aprilia ride but sadly that wasn't to be. What a waste in terms of Moto GP.

  5. I was a marshal on Comm's at Phillip Island – when the turn 6 crash happened I was able to look across at it. I had the red flag ready to use because it looked like that sort of incident, however Race Control maintained the last word (throughout all classes) on when yellow flags were withdrawn & if Red Flags were to be used. There was also an electronic lights system that Race Control could initiate directly, or over-ride use initiated at designated marshall sector points. So the decisions around that incident were all made by Race Control who could certainly view the incident clearly – both on the circuit TV & on the big screen TV coverage. The marshalls acted as directed.

  6. I find that to be the major change since MM93, VR46, DP26 and JL99 have not been on the grid, they didn't give there opponents that many opportunities to win the Championship. You couldn't crash 5x and still be in the hunt for the Championship. On the other hand, I'm no so excited about Rory Skinner in the American Racing Team, but I wish him the best of luck.
    Bagnia still have to ride the bike home as well, he's laid it down 5x this year, same FQ20.

  7. Peter talking about if nothings happened to Pecco in the beginning of the season, that’s the same argument that if nothing happened to Fabio in the end part, ifs and buts have to work both ways in a discussion like that

  8. Suzuki are likely simply taking notice of the writing on the wall in regards to the lack of a future for the internal combustion engine. Sadly the movers and shakers of the world have pronounced its days are numbered.

  9. Great podcast, l have some questions or suggestions in regards to the content mentioned that could be a good discussion. For the supersport 300, my suggestion would be to limit the number of riders in the race. Definitely agree with penalty and education, may be bring back the ride through penalty.
    With regards to moto2 incident, if they wanted to continue the race maybe have a safety car to cover the laps while the injured rider is moved to safety. I think what they did wrong in Suzuka f1 race was to allow drivers to change the theirs tyres under the safety car. This meant pier gassy was going faster than rest of the field if they were kept in close proximity to the safety car it would be a lower risk as the speeds would slower. Truly gutted with Jack being taken out and slightly. It is now Peco’s championship to lose. My predictions are 1st Bastianina, 2nd Martin, 3rd Miller. Cheers

  10. Can't you block simply the overtakes when there are too close groups, to allow create more space between riders? With a flag maybe, or let them start with larger margins in the start.
    In Motogp, the dangerously places are between position 8 to 18 and when you see them from above you see how this group phenomenon happens. They can qualify in 12th and reach the 3 first guys…
    So why couldn't they have more spaced starting places?
    Or a running start, after the first warmup lap, instead of stopping for the start, they could hold on their places and after the first lap, the race would begin without the stop and the riders wouldn't be in this group trouble

  11. Fantastic GP Phillip Island, all 3 classes top quality. The none red flag situation was terrible, race direction let the riders down so much. Certainly would have happened with Stuart Higgs, the overall No1 when it comes too the correct decision, instantly. Best news of the year in Rory Skinner into moto2. The most talented rider iv saw since Hizzy. A two year deal, massive pat on the back for American Racing an Hopper tooo 👍🏻 👍🏻.

  12. Yeah, but it's not just 20 it is the equipment he has. He's the only Yamaha rider to do anything with that bike, then you look across the paddock to the desmosedicci side 63 & 43 not to count the others swarming all over the Spaniards before they slammed the doors on the Italians.

  15. Whoever is responsible for the decision making at Suzuki needs to be fired for opting to remove such a powerful team from competition. Moto gp is the premier class of motorcycle racing where manufacturers seize the opportunity to showcase their best products to the world. Even if races aren't won, the benefit of advertising your product opens real opportunities. The Suzuki moto gp team is blessed with cohesiveness, an excellent and beautiful bike,and talented riders in Rins and Mir. Why in God's green earth would a board of directors or c.e.o seek to destroy such a good thing when it has done so much good for its product, is beyond my understanding. It really is a waste. So sad.😔

  16. I’m a Jack Miller fan. I wanted him to win his home race. I wanted him to win the championship. That did not and is not going to happen now because of the crash with Alex Maquez.
    Alex Marquez should NOT be penalised for the incident.
    It was a racing incident. He got his breaking point a bit wrong. No stupid coming from a mile back overtake attempt. It was a fraction of a second mistake. That’s all. Again, Alex should not be penalised.
    Being involved in a crash is part and parcel of racing, isn’t it? Don’t they say “If your not crashing your not trying hard enough”?
    Alex was trying really hard and he crashed. There’s his penalty right there. Jack was trying really hard too, and he was unlucky (i blame naming a corner after him, before the race. Commentators curse by a factor of 10)
    Penalties should be there to stop stupid unsafe unfair behaviour. What Alex did was none of that. It was an slight mistake made in the heat of battle.
    If they want to eradicate all possibility of contact, then run it like the Isle of Man TT, with a 10 second gap between each competitor (No! Don’t do that).
    And, If i had my way, every square inch of green concrete would get ripped up and replaced with gravel or grass (major safety issues aside). It’s motorcycle racing, not friggin’ tennis.

    MotoGP looks like it’s heading down the ruinous road that F1 went down. Rules, rules, rules and rules on top of rules. Races now being won by lawyers.
    Screw that!!
