25. I think that what king Swein means by "the Crown has will of its own" is that the will of a ruler is not the will of the state. Crown gives you power and authority to command everything, but you cant use it for your own gain. Empires either expand or wither, so you have to wage wars to keep your empire strong. You command the army, but its your vassals who lead it, they have their own interests and goals, so you have to keep them in mind so they follow or else they turn on you. The riches you gain are not yours, they are the kingdom's, and if you take all for yourself, you get an uprising and your own subjects will destroy the kingdom from inside. And if your son is unworthy or incapable to rule after your death, he will bring ruin to the kingdom, so you must get rid of him and find a better successor. So, it was a matter of state to choose a better heir – which seemed to be Harald at this point – and get rid of Canute to prevent the power struggle.
