   Also, I'm just a big fan of Japanese folklore. There's another version of Oiwa's tale where even Oume and her grandfather were into the plan. Instead of pushing Oiwa off a cliff when the poison wasn't enough to kill her, Iemon sent a friend to assault and kill her, thus giving him enough reason to leave her. The friend couldn't do it and instead shows Oiwa her disfigurement using a mirror (she didn't know what was happening to her face as they were so poor, they couldn't afford a mirror). Taken by anger and anguish, Oiwa cuts her neck with a katana that the man was carrying, cursing Iemon until her dying breath. So that no one else would know of the horrible tale, Iemon kills his friend. He then nails his corpse along with Oiwa's to wooden boards to float along the river.

   The wedding part is also the same although in addition to Oume's death, Iemon also kills her grandfather. Driven mad by Oiwa's appearances, he flees to the mountains but is still haunted by Oiwa's vengeful ghost. Fortunately by the end of the story, Oiwa's brother finds out and proceeds to kill Iemon. I think Oiwa also played a part in making sure her brother kills Iemon.
