Why You Shouldn’t Move to Japan (And Conditions for Those Who Should)

Spread The Viralist

I often receive comments and messages saying “My dream is to live in Japan.” As a Japanese living in Japan, on one hand, I am happy and honored about it, but on the other hand, I have mixed feelings too. It’s because I actually hope to leave Japan in the near future. But how did a Japanese man like me end up thinking this way?

So today, I will talk about the three main reasons why I personally cannot recommend you to live in Japan. The three reasons will get more and more important towards the end, so I hope you can stay with me until the end. Lastly, I will also like to list the kind of people who ARE suited to live in Japan.

Before I move on, I need to make it clear to you that the purpose of making this video is not to lessen the number of people living in Japan. My life’s goal is to try to make as many people happy as possible, so I wish that the information I share will be useful for anyone trying to plan their future. If there’s anything else you’d like to know more about living in Japan, please let me know in the comments!

  2. It's a mistake to assume that trends will continue indefinitely. Right now Japan is 41st out of 248 countries and dependencies in terms of population density, and Japan is also a very mountainous country, meaning it is, in practice, even more crowded. Nor is it likely that there's any policy that the Government can undertake to reverse the trend, in any case.

  3. Malaysia has been a popular destination for many Japanese people over the years. We have a lot of Japanese conveniences right here in Malaysia, we have a time difference of about an hour with Japan, hardly at risk of natural disasters, and we are practically sunny most days of the year! Would be amazing for you to come here, many Japanese expatriates here! All the best finding a place Shogo!

  4. You know many other places in the world claim to be safe. Yet in the distance a super volcano is in their backyard and it's due to erupt any time now. That deep rumbling activity underground is evidence the magma is still here in the Middle of the USA and fact is if goes then the middle of the USA will be destroyed. Can happen without warning a visit to yellow stone will teach you that. The only green garden is the one you make for yourself.

  5. I've seen you complain about fax machines in the past. Guess what. They're alive and well in the US too. Fax machines are everywhere in business. They're considered more "secure" than e-mail or other ways of sending documents. And people are just used to them.

  6. How would you increase the birth rate?
Like legit? I mean some anime I watched had some suggestions for a solution, but I don't think we could implement those legally.
Frankly though immigrants are not going to fix your problem. Ponzi scheme economies that require population growth to artificially boost GDP cannot be maintained long term. Just look at Europe.

  7. Sorry, Shogo but I think you will either never move, or you will return to Japan just as quickly. Particularly since COVID, every country has ridiculous government policies, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK have all reduced individual freedoms and there seems to be no sign of letting up. We all have inflation, and the governments are riding the high of their newfound power and implementing policies that disadvantage their respective populations.

  8. You could try Australia or New Zealand, but don't forget that the whole world is getting crazy from climat change. You might have some surprises 😖. As an example, nowadays, in France (European territory, not talking about territoires outre-mer), we have floods, tornadoes and this summer, I saw gigantic fires way too close. Smoke was the worst part…
Sorry I'm all doom and gloom ! Wish you the best ! 🙂

  9. Amazing scenery, wonderful food, and a unique culture and history? You might enjoy it in Alaska. Native Alaskan culture is at its strongest in Alaska, plus in towns like Anchorage, they have a really strong Japanese presence. Actually it's quite multi-cultured with people all over the globe living there. As for scenery, if you just google Alaska, you'll see it's one of the most beautiful places to live in.

  10. "We should crowdfund the Japanese to buy a new country because uhh like this they ain't making it to 2100 chief"

But for real, the gerontocracy will end in our lifetimes as a depopulation wave actually hits the developed world (unless someone figures out immortality within a few years) – but the inevitable disasters are decapitation tier at this point

  11. Maybe you could move to Peru? There were a great deal of asian immigrants around 200 years ago, so the country have many asian people there. I don't think it will be hard for you to adapt there, but you have to learn spanish. Many peruan people with asian ascendance might be curious of their original heritage, so you could teach them about japanese traditions

Also, New Zeland. It's close, maybe 2-3 hours by plane, and there are many mixed cultures. Plus, they already talk english, so you won't have to learn a new language

  12. Maybe just move to Okinawa still Japan great weather and lots of Americans so you can have culture classes here. Honestly you probably could contact a base here and explain how you want to teach true Japanese culture they may have suggestions on how you can do it. I find Okinawans to be much happier then any mainlander I ever met. It is still hard to make friends and they are a bit xenophobic but I find it much less xenophobic then mainland Japan, and mainland gets more xenophobic the further north you go. I mean you can not live your life in fear you can die tomorrow choking on a fish bone.

  13. I am not a 100% sure if you already do it but maybe you should also publish videos like this in Japanese. I feel like adressing the Japanese with those issues could actually have a positive impact.

  14. usually when someone dreams of living in some place they have some wonky ideas and think it's magic candyland where everything works

unless they have some specific vision, but then that sort of thing is usually different. Like getting somewhat rich and then moving to like Guatemala to live like a Sultan

  15. Please tour the US. We love Japanese traditional culture here. Especially school children! I don't know how to access this but schools invite cultural performers to elementary schools as enrichment.

  16. I'd love to have you move to Finland, but unfortunately our country is almost a perfect opposite to what you are looking for: far away from Japan and rather cold (and dark) in winter. But we do at least have lots of people of all ages who are interested in different aspects of Japanese culture.

I hope you'll find a perfect, warm place for your family to live in outside of Japan but near it.

  17. Canada LOVES Shogo. I will build a 20 100 year Shrine to honour Sun Goddess Amaterasu on the Ottawa River. Kyoto and Ottawa share a beautifully historical, toned down flamboyancy.

  18. Very clever, dip from the country, gather up some age and capital, skip the proverbial line, come back and tell them youngsters that crows are white! Very clever indeed 🧠🧠🧠

  19. I hope Japan has something similar to a Digital Nomad visa, so I can live there and work for a foreign company, I think in the current situation the only reasonable way is getting married 🙁

  20. You should most certainly move to the US or Canada, there are millions of people of Japanese heritage in North America and it's the best chance for traditional Japanese culture to grow abroad… Not to mention that Americans are obsessed with Japanese culture.

  21. I would persnonally recomend yo should come to México ITS basicly like you said you would be surrounded by history and delicious food plus there Is a lot of young peapole interest in japsnese colture

  22. Japan is the perfect example of designing a system that discourages childbirth and then being shocked people aren’t having children.

  23. Japan would be a nice place to VISIT for month, I'd like to see all the historic sites and battelgrounds. I'd never want to actually live there. I'd say, for any potential Japanese wanting exodus from there, come to the USA or somewhere in western Europe. If you're a Japanese with strong martial sentiments, I'd further recommend moving somewhere in the Southern states of USA, less regulation and can freely practice your arts. We also don't have annoying sword regulation, so if you've ever wanted to practice with European style sword arts, or just want to collect more than Nihonto, I'd strongly recommend it. Get enough folk and I would reckon your kind could build your own ' Neo-Kyoto ' if you wish!
