24. The Boeing 737 is a 57-year-old design (based on the 707) beset by rudder (1990s) and horizontal-stabiliser problems ('Max' version). I hope it is the final death knell for this geriatric plane, of which 10,926 have been built. Airbuses have modern designs and are my preferred equipment for short haul. Boeing's wide-bodies — 777 & 787 — are much newer and safer.

    The China crash is a carbon-copy of the SilkAir 185 disaster in 1997 over Sumatra. The NTSB tried to blame pilot suicide (unproven) to protect the brand but relatives won in LA court against the rudder-servo actuator manufacturer. A faulty part caused an uncommanded hard-over rudder in cruise, spinning the plane downwards, from which the pilots could not recover. Regulators cannot be trusted; passengers have to do their own research.
