Great video! If you want to see some controlled madness. Then check out Ari Vatanen's Pikes Peak hill climb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvXSXfL4XRc&t=1s
Interesting thing is that the WRC cars today are actually faster around the same course as the Groupe B cars. They have somewhat less power, but the tire and suspension technology has come so far from those days. Watch 2022 rallies and you can tell how much faster the cars are, especially around turns and in left/right transitions, not to mention how much further they jump. But no mistake, the Group B guys and gals were the wild west of rallying. Huge cojones on these folks.
When group B rally was banned many of those cars ended up in RallyCross. (RallyX)
They made them even faster (700hp!) RallyCross is driving against other cars on a short closed track. A controlled environment. Spectators can't go on the track. Much safer.
What this video was all about was ROAD-rally. It is basically an orientation drive over public roads where you are NOT allowed to speed. (yes, there are hidden speed checks!) Only on the 'closed off' SPECIAL STAGES are the cars timed against the clock. Together this makes up the total rally time of each team/car. The team with the lowest total time and the lowest number of penalty time wins the rally.
In between every few stages (usually 3 or 4) there is a chance to do service to the car, repairs, refueling , eat, drink, Sanitairy needs.
Even that is timed (service-in, 15min later service-out) and part of the total rally time for that team .
Walter Röhrl, one of the best drivers ever existed explained things like "Acceleration is, when the tears of joy flow horizontally over your cheeks" or "When you drive good the insects splash on the side of your car." Those people were just insane. And still I wish some crazy rich people revive a unrestricted rally. It is just incredible.
Thanks.👍
group b cars were INSANE! less than a ton and some had 500hp+++ they could 0-60 in less than 3 seconds, ON GRAVEL!!!
Rally drivers are like bodyguards I would completely trust them with my life, they have skill that is on a another level. React to walter röhrl.
The mechanics would find severed fingers in the cars intake ducts when the cars reached the service parks at the Portugal rally.
Those where wild days ^^ Amazing drivers but.. man…
Notghing much to say but it was cool until people started dying. Look at the WCR, as impressive but less dying
todays wrc rally cars is loads faster though
the audi got 700 hp
Real men. Camel cigarette smoking, red meat eating dudes, test piloting new technology in machines that had no restrictions off road that had more power and were almost as fast as formula one cars of the era. PS: the first car was a WRC rallly car (Subaru Imprezza), not group B.
Oh i use to watch B Rally, so great. Build your car faster and faster without restrictions that outpaced safety. It really was some of the best years
The spectators were allowed to line the road's because the road's were public road's so no barriers could be enforced same as what still goes on in the Isle of Man TT race's, people were so passionate about the race that they did not mind getting gravel chucked up in their face or having a slight knock from a car drifting around the corner or being the last person to get out of the way just for the best photograph.I remember the early days of pikes peak gravel track being the same, its unfortunate that so many accidents and deaths happened before the governing body had to step in. R.I.P to all who suffered such a loss.
Group "B" was insane!
So dangerous, it was banned in 1986.
Looks like the locals hadn't seen cars travelling that fast before,
crowding the roads, then trying to leap out of the way!
Usually separate timed starts for each car,
but what if a car was catching up, or had slowed down?
Although the cars were noisy, with the doppler effect,
you may not recognise the car is travelling towards you.
One tone bullet, everybody wants to get close to….. What could possibly go wrong…
These cars were built for this sort of punishment with heavy duty roll cages and full racing seat belt harnesses. These cars had crazy amounts of power. Group B was a category where they relaxed a lot of the rules for racing resulting in these Monster cars. These things accelerated like drag racing cars and do it on gravel, deep mud and Snow. Spectators got so close pit crews would find finger tips between the body panels on the cars from the fans trying to touch the cars as they passed.
funny note: in between all these men, it was the only woman who was the fastest of them all… Michelle Mouton in her AUDI QUATTRO…. incredible
the very best drivers in the world… in ANY car or series… but this couldnt go on like it did.. but great watch and time while nobody died….
Brad: Do you understand that?
Lucy: Yeah. It's French. _____
I was expecting some kind of translation… 😄
one of the greatest drivers, Walter Röhrl NEVER drove in finland because as he said, if he wants to fly, he would become a pilot. this means finland had and still has the most fastest rally stages (average speed can be up to 160km/h or even more) and they literally are flying through forests. Walter was scared to drive in finland or he just didnt like flying lol…
Mr Henri Toivonen was great driver🏁👍 I was 11 yrs old when he died, so because of his great career i have couple t-shirts of Toivonen and Lancia Delta S4 die cast model car 🇫🇮 Greetings from Finland ❤️
part of rally of portugal was group A era.
When you think that these cars were producing 600+ bhp witch was the same as a F1 car of the time , some of the spectators tryed to touch the cars as they drove by them, in the pit area it was nothing to find someones fingers that had been ripped off.
I remember this here in Portugal, the roads and the crowds here was insane. Still love the cars though
Rally racing is/was the pinnacle of all motorsports, IMO, as far as driving skill. Followed by Formula 1. And then way down on the list, after a rush hour commute in any big city or Christmastime parking lot driving at a large shopping complex, there's NASCAR. 😂
There's a reason there's VERY little rally racing in the USA. And it isn't people wouldn't love it.
13.20 the driver is the legendary michelle moutin, the one and only female driver who made it to the top grade of rallying and missed out on a world championship because her car broke down in the final rally rally africa.
one of the best drivers commentated that at the end of some stages the engineers had to scrape bits of fingers off the side of the cars from ppl trying touch them as they went past.
my stepdad had an original group b audi rally car number R26 built that he spend nearly 10 yrs restoring, sadly it got to expensive for his meager budget and was sold to a private museam in germany. this was hidden in perth West Aus the whole time he was restoring it. only telling the story afterwards as they are now so rare.
If you stand on the outside of a corner, you deserve everything thats coming 🤡
15.45 ford rs 200 crash and Henry toiven and his Co driver dying ended group b rally
There was a group b rally in Africa and the mechanics at base after the race where picking fingers out of the bodywork of the car
I think you will enjoy this POV video of Brazilian police motorcyclists in a high-speed chase on hilly and narrow streets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jloTeBYOQtc
If you thought this was good, I really think you would enjoy reacting to the Isle of Man TT race.
You should watch Driver 61s take on a subject, its a top notch history bomb of the B group era.
B Group cars were insane, I saw them live when I was a kid. RIP Henkka and Sergio, and Bottega, forever on route.
I love your T-Shirt
@3:33 a shiver godes all over my body.. that sound…
Never understood why people call it Drifting, to me it has always been called Powerslides and Rallying.
These Men and Women that raced in Group B were absolutely crazy and mad as cut snakes.
Those cars were fitted with the most powerful engines that the engineers and mechanics could shoehorn into them. Completely nuts!
The Deaths were quite high with both spectators and drivers and their navigators routinely killed
