Is paradise waiting for us in the afterlife? Some people who have had near-death experiences say they have glimpsed the afterlife. Medical experts doubt this, however, in the absence of any scientific explanations.
Are near-death experiences authentic reports from the afterlife? Or a figment of the imagination? A bright light at the end of a tunnel, a short film of one’s own life and indescribable feelings of happiness – this is how brain researcher Gerhard Roth describes his near-death experience. He is not alone: thousands of people have such experiences every year. What‘s behind these reports? Scientists are working intensively to fathom the mechanisms of such an experience, and to find out whether these people really could have glimpsed into the afterlife.
Researchers almost always explain near-death experiences in terms of neurological processes in the brain. Moreover, they argue, most people with near-death experiences are “only” clinically dead – and thus, medically speaking, still alive and kicking. With modern techniques, scientists can track the process of dying more and more precisely, and describe what happens in the brain in the process.
But one question remains: Why do we have such experiences in the first place? A brand new study presents a possible explanation for the first time: Evolution may have ensured that we experience the moment of dying as being as pleasant as possible. This is why the brain is programmed to release opioids or to dig up old, long-forgotten memories when the end is approaching.

I'm not certain wether what I experienced a couple of months ago and the one that was years ago counts as coming back from the hereafter ! The first time , I was asleep and I could see what was in front me ,all the furniture and everything was there also a man in black appearing in front of me and his neck and his head was still coming it was terrifying , I knew I was dying but I came back from it .
The second time which happened recently was me floating under the ceiling and going beyond ,I was feeling the detachment and a weird noise started , I could feel sth was happening to my brain ! This sec one was a near death experience
P.S I get sleep paralysis a lot of the time , I used to get them several times during a night's sleep , no one in my family gets them a often ,maybe 1 or two times during their lifetime
my two friends have told me about their Near death experiences and they tell me about walking through a tunnel.
It's all in their heads. A function of the brain. There is no afterlife.
The Out Of Body Experience of the NDE has very little to do with the way they describe OBEs in other contexts here. People who have OBEs in NDEs fly outside the room, float down the hallway, observe events in other places, visit their families etc. No stupid electrode experiments or centrifugal effects on pilots have caused anything like that in anyone, and documentaries should clean up these concepts instead of pasting over these differences in a misguided search that has to find an explanation at any cost. No serious scientist researching this subject has ever said that neuroscience can explain anything about the NDE. There are a lot of theories, none satisfactory, and none with any empirical evidence for why it should be the right one, and not any of the 50 others. I guess you felt compelled to make a documentary that ends with a materialistic dismissive foreclosure of this topic because you learned that, as smart people, that is what you ought to be doing, instead of leaving things out of the open, with the possibility of a non-materialistic explanation. You are playing at intellectuality. The Wikipedia article on this is more detailed and more informative.
Measuring brain activity to better understand death is childish and naive. Embarrassing really …
Science. It is a good thing but sometimes not. Trying to explain away something we aren’t meant to fully understand….yet. I know it’s all part of being who we are. Of course we wonder and try to figure it out!
If it’s real to you, it’s real. It’s all relative.
My mother, who is now passed on, was never one to deeply wonder about where we go when we pass or be philosophical about a lot of things. In fact if I tried to talk to her about such things it was definitely impressed on me that I was being silly so when she had a car accident 25 years ago and she told me how for awhile she was floating above her car which was in the middle of a busy intersection. Looking down at her car, the driver of the other car who hit her, I had so much hope that there really is more to just this life and we go on to something else. Plus the day she passed 3 years ago now, my sister in law called me BEFORE I had told her and my brother that she had died, and told me that Mom was okay and that she had never felt so much joy. How freaky and comforting is that?
11:22 for this you need to read islam. Islam says a dead person's soul goes into a place called Barzakh:a place inbetween afterlife & this life. in that place good soul joins good people & bad soul joins bad people till the judgement day comes. On that day people are tried for their actions in this life & then given rewards accordingly so that every sin is punished & every good deed is rewarded. All this is in under control of Our Creator.
What about the man braindead that saw heaven
BS
I died and it was just

3:40 that guys name is literally 'nickel mercury' like the elements
I think that near-death experiences can be explained by having a situation where two different living beings were to believe they are the same being. And, I don't believe in life after death cause I have not heard a sufficiently convincing argument. Maybe, while we are alive our bodies are organizing energy within our bodies, and if you were only able then to perceive that organized energy that could be seen as a living entity.
It does not explain hundreds of stories people for instance knowing details of the hospital. For instance one woman saw a tennis shoe on the roof of the hospital while leaving her body. One little girl describes in exact details what her grandpa looked like in his prime and also describes seeing her little sister who she did not know about dieing who died in her mom's stomach so these scientists don't know shit. Oh also a clinically brain dead man went to heaven and saw all the same things tons of other people around the world seen during a nde so explain that one science.
I was involved in hospice Case management for 20 years. During that time I attended several thematologist conventions. Thanos is the great God of death. These were scientists who had a explored What happens when a patient is clinically dead. I will just give you one Patience experience although I Was advised of Many.
This is a young woman who had a simple tonsillectomy. She had children at home and a young husband she had instructed him how the children were to brush their teeth and be in bed by 9 PM. Unexpectedly she began to hemorrhoid after surgery in a room by the time the staff got in and began working on her a little time had passed, Due to her age they continued the CPR for an extended period of time called her husband and advised him of the problem. Upon His arrival at the hospital they had resuscitated her. She had been clinically dead for about 20 minutes. When you walked in the room She was completely alert like nothing had ever happened and very upset with him. In a loud voice She expressed a lot of concern that he had not followed her orders at all about the children she had left her body which is Common she could say what was going on on the other Hospital floors. Once outside of the hospital she proceeded to her home and when she arrived she saw her husband smoking a pipe reading the paper the children were jumping up-and-down on She told him what was on the television when she was there and she realized they hadn't done their homework they hadn't brushed their teeth he had not done anything she Had requested Him to do with their children.
He was extremely surprised that she could describe everything that was happening in the room she visited she knew the program on the TV she saw him smoking the pipe reading the paper and making comments to himself about what was in the paper she saw what the children were wearing they didn't have their pajamas on they still had their school clothes on They were jumping up-and-down they don't look like they brush their teeth either she said to him why didn't you do what I asked you to do I was only gonna be here for one night?
So no I don't think this is just a physiological /neurological experience. Some of the Patient documentation is astounding they can all describe what was going On in the hospital room the area outside of the hospital room whoever they vis it down to what they were wearing where they were how they were behaving and if this was just something neurological they wouldn't be able to do that. Also all the patients that were interviewed said they no longer feared death regardless of their Religious, personal, educational level they all have the same experience. So if this was something Neurological or psychological It would not be the same because we are all unique and are in our physiology in personal opinions. I became a believer that there is a Existence after this one. I wasn't sure when I started in hospice I was rather agnostic but working with the dying Convince me That there is another existence outside of our Corporal body. And scientifically speaking energy which is the life in our body cannot be created nor destroyed they can only change form that's a basic law of science.
Not everything needs to be explained. Faith and science coexist and one shouldn't speak for the other. 😒
Definitely biased to the materialist reductionist perspective! Such an important topic, used to such great content from DW, Very briefly touched on some unexplainable aspects, then spent 95%+ of it having only physical explanations, regarding anoxia and brain activity surges, to vaguely explain only the most simplistic aspects of the experiences. Virtually uncountable numbers of experiences from people all over the world, who have not been in contact with each other, have including experiences more vivid, detailed, and complex than anything in normal life, coming back with information about people they have never met, from places they have not been, and about situations which their physical body and senses had no way of knowing. All kinds of people, from all walks of life. A few moments of brain activity surges simply cannot account for that! If this was a less important topic I wouldn't be so bothered, but it is almost as if they put minimal effort into this particular episode and/or were too biased to see the logical holes they were missing. Have come to expect great content from DW, and have a strong interest in this topic, so it kind off threw me off tbh
There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy (science)- William Shakespeare
I do appreciate you at least presenting the topic. Thank You
When prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, addressed the dead people, his companions asked him how could you talk to someone who is already dead? Then he reclaimed that they could hear better than you..
This program is anti-God. They don’t want you to believe. So they create a documentary you will watch, intending to cast doubt and make you think “scientific evidence” suggests you’re just a piece of shit and don’t matter. Or “it’s a function of the brain”.. blah, blah, blah.
anything that involves out of body metaphysical soul world is 180 degree different from your physical human body 3D environment. one example is that IF it is an afternoon in your time frame, that is night time is metaphysic time frame. it will always the opposite !!! … that is why so many demon lurking at night time, because on the other side is a noon time.
you can make cool movies based on this !!! … so people are aware that there is a life after this world !!!
John 11:25 !!!
Blind people from birth have described veridical perceptions during out-of-body experiences at the time of their NDE, which questions the materialist hypothesis. In Dutch prospective studies on near-death experiences they reported they could exclude physiological, psychological, pharmacological and demographic explanations for the occurrence of a NDE. Pim Van Lommel ran the study.
In hinduism that tunnel is called bhavargufa. Lord krishna show it twice. First time to his mother and next in battle of mahabharat.
I feel like this was biased
This DW documentary is fascinating, cerebral, and so well done.
I am completely in love with this French girl…I know: it is just messages from the brain.
Superficial, childish, outdated and unbelievably naive "experts" . Better forget it. Waste of time. Go to real researchers instead.

How many people didn't realize atoms create life forms and the re-existence though atoms?
No one never will be able to fix this curiosity till someday experience by ourselves…!
I lost my 43 year old son to suicide on 10-23-2021. He had a long standing mental illness. Several months later I had my teeth cleaned, and my hygienist told me of her near death experience when she was in a bad car accident. Her body into a tunnel passing heavenly bodies. At the end of the tunnel her recently dead aunt told her to go back because it wasn’t her time. It was so comforting.
Afterlife is a big hoax. You live, you die and You're done.
Ugh just chalking it up to the brain having extra stimulation doesn't begin to answer the question. How does lack of oxygen produce what people describe as NDE. Just because they say their work is scientific doesn't make it so. Please make them prove what they say instead of just trusting them.
This Life is really just a video game. A simulation developed in the spirit world – the ultimate Virtual Reality program , because spirits are f-ing tired of floating around being spirits, so they created a material universe which is most likely no bigger than a walnut.
What about those who have seen others while “dead”, even in other rooms? Or what blind from burth people have seen, those who saw people they didnt know were dead, organized thought, etc etc
There is no afterlife. It's the greatest con religion has foisted on us since the dawn of time. Religious leaders use it to create ignorant fearless terrorists from Pope Gregory and the Crusades, to today's Islam. Only simple minded people would believe in Heaven or Paradise. I pity them spending their lives preparing for what's never going to come. You have one life to live, this one.
materialistic 100% documentary, there is no mention of consciousness beyond a chemical reaction in the brain
What happens when we die?
Jesus compared death to a deep sleep. A person in a deep sleep is not aware of what is happening around him. How is death similar to sleep? After someone dies, he does not feel pain. He does not feel lonely, no matter how much he loved his friends and family. “The dead know nothing at all,” says the Bible.—Read Ecclesiastes 9:5.
How do we benefit from knowing the truth about death?
Many people are afraid of death—and even of the dead! But you can be comforted by what the Bible says about death. Jesus said: “The truth will set you free.” (John 8:32) Contrary to what some religions claim, the Bible does not teach that a person has an immortal soul that lives on after death. Thus, no one suffers after death. Also, since the dead are not aware of anything, they cannot harm us. So there is no need to appease or worship the dead, and there is no need to say prayers for them.
Some people say that they can communicate with the dead. But this is impossible. As we just learned, the dead “know nothing at all.” Those who think that they are communicating with dead loved ones may actually be communicating with demons who pretend to be people who have died. So knowing the truth about death protects us from the demons. Jehovah warns us about trying to communicate with the dead because he knows that contact with the demons will harm us.—Read Deuteronomy 18:10-12.
There are freshwater eels in New Zealand which can live for a century, and will then even cross over dry land to get to the ocean. They will then make their way unerringly to an area around about the Solomon Islands thousand of km away, mate and spawn. Then die. The eggs will hatch and slowly but surely make their way back to New Zealand, and then they will make their way to the waters where their parents lived. Climbing up vertical cliffs up waterfalls if need be. Only to repeat the process again, and again, and again over the centuries.
Very interesting, and comforting, documentary! Unfortunately, the problem with death is also its impact on the living.
