5. The largest threat to them is poaching of their horns for use in traditional Chinese medicine. Their horns are not ivory like most people assume, but actually keratin, the stuff hair is made of. Poachers will knock out the rhinos and cut into their heads to remove the horns at the base. The resulting wound often ends up infected and most don't survive. Even the ones who do survive will struggle to find a mate or defend themselves as their horn is both a weapon and a mating display. Most wild rhinos have had their horns cut down to deter poachers which is sadly one of the only ways to keep them from being targeted.

   Please do not support traditional Chinese medicine. TCM is heavily based in poaching and mistreatment of animals like rhinoceros, tigers, bears, and turtles.

14. I think that the solution to these animals being slaughtered for their horn is to make sure that the local population is not so very desperate that that horn means life or death to them. If people are starving their children are dying they have no Health Care no chance of a future, to tell these people don't shoot that rhinoceros for its horn because they're almost extinct isn't going to weigh very much. Those people are going to say well my family is almost extinct so what do you want me to do. Western and Eastern powers are doing with Africa the same thing that they have always done with Africa, exploited to the max with no care for the local populations. This cannot be glad to continue.
