Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which has been raging in the Indian Ocean for several days, killed 7 people as it passed through Madagascar and weakened significantly when it made landfall in Mozambique on Friday as a moderate tropical storm.
Mozambique’s second-busiest port has suspended operations to prepare for the arrival of severe tropical storm Freddy, which is forecast to make landfall on Friday as a tropical cyclone.
Winds accompanying the weather event average 65 km/h with gusts up to 90 km/h, the Malagasy government said in a statement on Thursday, raising the death toll on the Big Island from five to seven. The cyclone moves more slowly, at a speed of 19 km/h.
It was expected to start hitting the coast of Mozambique overnight, between the center and south of the country, before its eye reached the coast around 1000 GMT, according to forecasters.
In Madagascar, it caused significant damage. Among the seven who died, four drowned, and three more died “as a result of the collapse of the house,” the disaster management agency said.
There are currently no missing persons.
According to the latest updates, 78,078 Malagasy people were affected by the floods, many of whom had to flee their homes.
Cyclone Freddy made landfall on Tuesday evening with winds of around 130 km/h and heavy rain.
