Wait For It…The Mongols!: Crash Course World History #17

Spread The Viralist

In which John Green teaches you, at long last, about the most exceptional bunch of empire-building nomads in the history of the world, the Mongols! How did the Mongols go from being a relatively small band of herders who occasionally engaged in some light hunting-gathering to being one of the most formidable fighting forces in the world? It turns out Genghis Khan was a pretty big part of it, but you probably already knew that. The more interesting questions might be, what kind of rulers were they, and what effect did their empire have on the world we know today? Find out, as John FINALLY teaches you about the Mongols.

  1. Although the Mongols tried a lot to destroy the Islamic world, they eventually converted to Islam in large numbers, not by force, but by their will.

  2. forget history class, i might just start watching john's videos for fun lol

edit: and you can turn the captions on to german! both my history teacher and duolingo will be proud

  3. 9:02 'the number they killed is in the millions'. They killed 25-30 million people just in China, as a deliberate policy of depopulation. This was the greatest genocide in human history and halved the population of china in fifty years, which for some reason John is glossing over as 'not uniquely brutal'.

  4. Wait.. all the words you’re using when you were talking about Mongolians, are in Turkish. Timucin, kurultai,ögedei, khan, genghis etc.. are Turkish ethnicity related to Mongolians?

  5. Mongol language is so close to modern Turkish: for instance their election of leader in Kurultay : this word kurultay we still use today. And also the word yurt means also homeland in modern Turkish in addition to the yurt tents. Also the name of Cengiz and Timuçim , Ögeday are today used boy names in Turkey. So if you want to see linkage to todays languages it would be a nice history session . Thanks for a great channel .

  6. Imperialism that lasts is better….senseless destruction is stupid. you conquer for power, killing everyone doesn't solve anything it gives you power over nothing. If my city was conquered id rather live under new rule than for my loved ones and I to be killed.
