Just in case anyone needs to do this in the future, hit the corners with a smaller pointed object. The reason the rock worked the second time is because it angled just right to apply all its force into a singular point. Please don't throw giant rocks, you'll have more success with small sharp rocks or, even better, a small piece of ceramic (i know that isn't just lying around). I get saving an animal, I'd do it too. In fact I look all the time if I see a dog in case it's hot. But it's not worth the risk of a big ass rock bouncing back at your knee and breaking it. Or ribs.
