FedEx flight 80 was preparing for its cargo flight to Narita Airport, Japan.
After the loading was completed, the crew got permission from ATC to taxi towards the runway for takeoff.
On board the flight were 2 crew members.
The aircraft was Macdonald Douglas MD-11. It was built in 1994 as passenger airliner and was acquired temporarily by NASA in 1995. Later the aircraft was operated by Delta Air Lines from 1996 to 2004. Then the trijet was sold to FedEx in October 2004.
2:20 am
Flight 80 took off from Guangzhou for its 1,800 miles of overnight journey to Narita Airport, Japan. The First officer was the pilot flying, while the captain was pilot monitoring.
The en-route part of the flight was uneventful.
It was early morning in the destination airport.
Let’s talk about those aircrafts and the wind information given by the crew which landed on the same runway before flight 80.
06:27 A Boeing 747F operated by Nippon cargo stated the wind as Plus minus 15 kts.
06:32 Another boeing 747F operated by Nippon stated the wind as Plus 15 to 20 kts and minus 10 below 1,000 feet.
06:41 A Boeing 767 operated by Japan airlines stated that the wind is plus minus 15 kt below 2,000 ft.
06:46 A Boeing 747 operated by Nippon Airways stated the wind as really rough.
Non of these flights got the windshear warning from onboard sensors.
The aircraft was descending through 1000ft and was flying with autopilot and auto throttle engaged.
Approach speed was set to 164 kts, auto ground spoiler was armed and AUTO BRAKE was set as MEDIUM.
ATC provided the pilot report to the airplane that there was a windshear of plus or minus 15 kt on the final approach toward Runway 34L below 2,000 ft and added that the surface wind was 320° at 23 kt with the maximum 34 kt and the minimum 15 kt.
ATC issued a landing clearance for Runway 34L to the airplane and added that the wind was 320° at 29 kt with the maximum 36 kt and the minimum 17 kt and the altimeter setting 29.56.
The aircraft touched down the runway surface and bounced.
When the Main landing gears left the
ground during the bounce, the auto ground spoilers started to deploy. Right after, the plane made the second touchdown with a nose low attitude, and bounced back.
The aircraft touched the runway with sound of loud bang and rolled towards left while the roll angle was about -15°. The airplane was engulfed in flames. After further rolling over to the left, the airplane got inverted and swerved off to the left from Runway 34L and eventually stop in the grass area.
The fire became stronger due to strong winds.
It took two hours for the firefighters to extinguish the blaze, which killed both pilots and completely destroyed the aircraft.
Investigation
The investigation was done by Japan Transport Safety Board in the cooperation with National Transportation Safety Board USA.
According to the investigators, the Large nose-down elevator input at the first touchdown resulted in a rapid nose down motion during the first bounce, followed by the second touchdown on the nose landing gear with negative pitch attitude. Because of that, the pitch angle rapidly increased by the ground reaction force, causing the larger second bounce.
In addition, the investigators stated some indirect causes such as:
Fluctuating airspeed, pitch attitude and gusty wind resulted in an approach with a large sink rate
Late flare with large nose-up elevator input resulted in the first bounce and large pitch attitude change during the bounce possibly made it difficult for the crewmembers to judge airplane pitch attitude and airplane height relative to the ground.

Fed Ex 80 in RFS
Good visuals!
Exsact same plane airport and runway even airline happned later with the same things fedex flight 14
そこは成田ではなく、茨城県です。
It's Mc Donnell. It's been mentioned as Mac Donald in the video
What game is this lemme guess rfs
Can you please do UPS flight 6 thank you! 😁
Here it is

I have video of A Ghost On The Runway just after the crash Of Fed Ex 80 which no one caught but me till i watched it again for 100th time
Nice information
The final push
Video shows 34L at Haneda Airport. Not Narita, where the accident happened.
That was terrible wind. I am surprised that they attempted to land in that. The nose down suggests wind shear at moment of landing.
Imagine, plane spotting then you caught a plane crash
buen video es el unico video que mejor explica el accidente de youtube
I'm looking forward for that day we'll hit 100k subs
i really wished that flight simulators had better crash animations.
Also just call China china pls, as a chinese it's weird for me to say People's Republic of China
Anyways, great content 😀
