Barkha Dutt More than 280 people were killed and over 900 have been injured in a horrific train derailment that occurred on Friday evening at around 7 pm in Odisha’s Balasore. The derailment of 10 to 12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express caused them to fall onto the opposite track. Subsequently, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express collided with the derailed coaches, leading to the derailment of three to four of its own coaches. Adding to the tragedy, a goods train was also involved in the crash.
Editors Update: A latest government update says the goods train was static and what the Coramandel Express crashed into causing its derailment. The video above was filmed with available information earlier.

Those who responsible for this accident must be punished and they have to be removed from service. My deep condolences to victims families.
Railways are now changing the story, first one was coramandel super fast express collided with a goods train on the same track, because of the high speed impact the compartments of the coramandel fell into the other track which was rammed by yeshwantpur howrah super fast express.
Now fingers will point at the railway staff as how two trains came on same track or the loco pilots over shot the signals…
Well how this happened? Since of late focus is on Vande Bharat trains, thereby improving existing facilities r ignored.

That sounds like a cooked up logic. How did 3 trains come in 2 tracks?
So, it's not a simple derailment started the sequel. It's the initial mistake of letting 2 trains go on the same track. They collided and fell off to the second track. 3 rd train collided with it.

Correction: It started when Coramendal collided with goods train present on the same track
