The reality of a knife fight is brutal and downright gruesome. In this video street fighter and Jeet Kune Do practitioner Paul Vunak demonstrates just how devastating one strike with a knife can be.
Without getting overly graphic, if you saw a knife and what it did, what it could do to somebody when you’re cutting them that many times, you will understand and truly appreciate the value of the knife. What I’d like to do is I’d like to further that concept by actually taking a piece of meat, and that’s really what we’re made of, and I want to cut it. I’m just going to take a knife and I’m just going to give it an angle one and slash that baby in half. And I want you to see what it looks like. I want you to take a real long, deep look at this meat because that’s what your arm is going to be like. Just one simple shot. Now, as you notice, this was just the very first shot I did. You would not Believe, a karambit. Horror. However, it is most effectively used, when applied with skillful moves, from the Filipino Silat karate. The way they move their arms to attack,and recovery movements from their strikes, were developed for very close in strike range thrusts.
It was like the fist moves, were developed for this knife.

This is why even on Paul Vunaks knife defense videos he recommends the first line of knife defense be to retreat. If you are able to.
That's why if your attacker has a knife, run if you can. If you can't, hopefully you have some pepper spray or another weapon on you and know how to use it!

I'm a RANGER— and yes i KNOW what a knife can do– I've been cut- managed to live- but it ain't fun. The sad part is- the guys that KNOW what they're doing– well- you CAN"T prepare for it- because you are walking along one minute and dead or dying the next.. and NEVER see it coming!!

Gave my daughter a decent folding knife when she was 9 (kershaw) and told her "if someone grabs you that you don't know, take that knife out and stab away, and stab continously about the arms, face, neck, back, ass, wherever you can reach with it. Keep stabbing until they let you go, then run and get help."
There is a reason guns became a weapon of choice.
