At least 55 people have died in wildfires on two Hawaiian islands. Many more are still missing. The governor says the blazes are the worst natural disaster in the history of the US state. Residents were shocked by the speed with which the fires spread and had harrowing escapes.

It is so crazy to see boats and ocean side buildings all burnt like that. The water is right there, it sounds like some really bad town planning although I am guessing that fire was never an issue for that town before so perhaps they were just unprepared but jeeze, that is really sad for the people living there. My heart goes out to them

I hope the planners for the rebuild are thinking about sea level rise, or they'll soon have a different catastrophe on their hands. Encroaching sea water wouldn't be good for underground power lines or anything else. Worldwide, we're going to have to give up on building beside shorelines.

The Hawaiian "authorities" were overwhelmed. Try all the development on a crowded island. Blame a real-estate developer for Hawaii's fire problems and climate change on the whole.
If everything is so obvious why do we have no airtankers ready to be in action within a few minutes? This tragedy was totally preventable. It's not about how many visitors coming to Hawaii, it's about how we're prepared for disasters like that.
The clown that talks about the downslope winds does not live here. This was not a natural disaster. It was caused.
Oh yeah, that's the ticket, tell us more about rebuilding, building back better and BS like that.

Invasive grass species took over the hills when sugar cane farmers stop farming. But why did the farmers quit farming in the first place? For a while the authorities used to have controlled burns to minimize the dangers because a similar fire happened before on a different part of the island but then they stop doing it. Why? California stop doing controlled burns too and we saw what the result was. With all that fuel in plain sight why did the authorities didn't even bother to create fire breaks between the hills and the built-up areas. One farmer created his own fire break and save his house and farm, but he'll probably end up paying a fine for creating such a fire break and for trying to save his house. As a community facing the Pacific Ocean, they should have some kind of warning mechanism in case of Tsunamis. Why was this warning system not used? But the saddest part has yet to come because the billionaire vultures are already eyeing and planning on what they are going to build knowing that working people who've lost their homes and small businesses won't be able to easily rebuild. Anyway, tree huggers will just blame it all on climate change.
