Hindenburg Disaster – real footage of the terrible crash 1937

Spread The Viralist

Movietone’s coverage of the Hindenburg disaster – filmed by Al Gold, Larry Kennedy and Deon De Titta. Sound engineer Addison Trice.

“Hindenburg’s” fate adds another victim to toll of airships. The doom of the great Zeppelin which has been graphically told in newspapers, was shot in full by a newsreel camera. We issue it as news, and with sympathy for those involved or bereaved by the calamity. Described by Ivan Scott.

Scenes of the airship in flight. Shots of the ship in the air on fire and falling to earth. Scenes after the fire. Skeleton of the airship on ground. Hindenburg Disaster.

From “Movietone Presents the 20th Century” by Lawrence Cohn. “A superb example of Movietone’s on-the-spot coverage was the filming of the tragic Hindenburg disaster on a cloudy, overcast day at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937. Undoubtedly one of the most dramatic newsreel events of all time, the explosion reduced the dirigible to a smoldering mass of ruins within seconds, and several members of the New York staff were directly under the huge airship when it exploded. The Hindenburg had made numerous Atlantic crossings, and the one of May 6th was expected to be no different from the many previous routine landings. Despite a history of nothing unusual happening, this symbol of Hitler’s Nazi Germany was covered at every landing by Movietone cameramen because of Editor-in-Chief Truman Talley’s intuitive feeling that someday the Hindenburg would explode. Therefore, despite the protests of the various camera crews, one was always present and Talley’s intuition resulted in the timely coverage of one of the most famous events of all time.”

  1. Psyop! Planned. This tech was intentionally removed for nefarious purposes, from the common man. Imagine the opportunities if this tech was still allowed for the public today.

  2. the main problem with the Hindenburg is the fact that the manufacturer used hydrogen gas instead of helium as the lifting gas for the Hindenburg, hydrogen is a very dangerous gas because it is highly flammable. Before the Hindenburg was built, other rigid airships were built using helium as the main or only source of lifting gas, unlike hydrogen, helium is not flammable, so it is a much safer gas to use. But helium was also more expensive so the Hindenburg builders cut corners and used the much more dangerous hydrogen instead which was cheaper to produce. Once again another example of greedy companies putting profits before people's safety.

  3. Nazi Germany the nation that owned these airships hid the destruction of the hind from their nation until the end of the war. You can see it barely but it had two giant swastikas on its tail. It flew over America a lot before the end. Different era of thinking about Germany than cameras and historians can imagine. They were top dog

  4. Now we have commercial Boeing flights crashing straight into the ground from computer glitches and no one bats an eye…. They have been worse than this Hindenburg disaster, with hundreds of passengers dying instantly. And people talk about it for 2 days then forget…

  5. There was a movie in the 70’s called the hindenburg. Its 90% fact, 10% speculative fiction, all wrapped around a politically charged detective story.

  6. Holy crap, I thought it was a sure no survivors situation looking at it. So weird how this tragedy is just a pop culture reference for many shows…it must have traumatized every person who survived or witnessed!
