Morocco earthquake kills more than 2,000 and damages historic Marrakech. Rescuers were digging through rubble in remote mountainous areas of Morocco on Saturday in a desperate bid to find survivors after more than 2,000 people were killed in the deadliest earthquake to strike the country in decades.
Morocco’s largest earthquake in more than 120 years occurred south of Marrakesh on Friday evening, with a magnitude of 6.8M.
The earthquake occurred in the High Atlas mountains in Morocco shortly after 11pm. local time at a relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.4 miles), the USGS said, with the epicenter located about 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, a city of about 840,000 people and a popular tourist destination .
The USGS said the quake had an initial magnitude of 6.8 when it struck at 11:11 p.m., with shaking lasting several seconds. Morocco’s National Seismic Monitoring and Warning Network measured it at 7.2 on the Richter scale.
