William the conqurer didn't think the English throne belonged to him due to ancestry but rather by agreement. Harolds father, along with his sons, was exiled in 1051 by king Edward the confessor for disobeying royal orders. William was then named successor by Edward. In 1052 Harold invaded and fought to have his father Godwine and his family restored. Harold became the leading figure in the kingdom but in 1064 was sent by Edward to Normandy to confirm William as his successor. Harold was shipwrecked and held ransom by Guy l of Ponthieu. William, overlord to Guy l, demanded Harolds release and Harold promised fealty and to protect Williams claim to the English throne. 1066 comes and Edward dies but names Harold as his successor on his deathbed despite his promises to William. William isn't having that shit so he invades in September and kills Harold at Hastings. Had nothing to do with ancestry, it was a broken promise.
