Officer Pulls Over Couple Minutes before Fatal Crash

Around 1:49 AM on August 4, 2021, Officer Jon Nunez with the North Bergen Police Department stopped a 2022 Kia Stinger at 61st Street and Kennedy Boulevard for excessive speeding and reckless driving. He made contact with driver and his passenger, who were identified as 24-year-old Luis Fernando Cevallos and 27-year-old Alexis Rodriguez. Alexis told the officer that they were on their first date, and she blamed herself for his reckless driving because she was in a rush to get home. Officer Nunez reassured Alexis that it was not her fault and issued Luis 3 citations for reckless driving, failure to observe a flashing traffic signal, and violation of restrictions on a provisional license. Before letting him drive away, Officer Nunez reminded Luis to drive responsibly to avoid a fatal accident. The traffic stop was cleared around 2:02 AM.

Around 2:13 AM, Officer Jessica Toro transmitted over the police radio a motor vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer on Route 1-9 and 36th Street, and Officer Nunez (the same officer) responded. As he approached the scene of the accident, he observed the same vehicle that he had just stopped a few minutes earlier. The occupants of the Kia Stinger appeared lifeless and he immediately called for a crash team to investigate a fatal accident. While it was apparent that the driver was Luis Fernando Cevallos, Officer Kevin Rodriguez looked through Alexis Rodriguez’s purse to determine her identity because Officer Nunez had not asked Alexis for her identification during the traffic stop.

Sergeant Schubert, Sergeant Yousef, Officer Rodriguez, Officer Perez, Officer Vitali, and Officer Sloan arrived on scene shortly afterwards. ALS Unit 476 and North Bergen EMS South also arrived on scene. Both the driver and occupant of the vehicle were pronounced deceased on scene by a doctor at 2:26 AM. After they were pronounced deceased, Sergeant Tattoli contacted both the North Arlington Police and the Bergenfield Police to make Next of Kin notifications.

As Officer Nunez proceeded to collect documentation from the truck driver and get his account of what happened, he told Officer Nunez that he was backing into 36th Street to make a delivery at the loading dock of Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors. As he was backing in, the Kia Stinger which was traveling southbound struck his tractor trailer at an excessive rate of speed. Officer Vitali eventually transported the truck driver to police headquarters so he could provide them with a voluntary statement.

Sergeant Tattoli informed the Hudson County Medical Examiner’s Office about the fatal accident. Around 2:45 AM, Detective Mena arrived along with Officer Suarez to conduct their investigation. Sergeant Ragland from the Hudson County Prosecutors Collision Unit arrived on scene at 3:37 AM. An investigator from the Medical Examiner’s Office arrived at 5:35 AM and they removed both the remains at 6:10 AM. The Kia Stinger was towed from the scene at 6:30 AM and the roadway was back in service by 6:45 AM.

At 1:00 PM, Detective Mena returned to Tumino’s Towing with Secaucus Police Lieutenant Martin Moreda, a member of the Hudson County Regional Crash Team. They removed the EDR (event data recorder) from the Kia Stinger and Lieutenant Moreda had the information downloaded. By 7:00 PM, Lieutenant Moreda determined that 5 seconds prior to impact, the Kia Stinger was traveling at 124 MPH (181.784 feet per second). At the moment of impact, the Kia Stinger was traveling at 68 MPH (99.688 feet per second). On August 24, 2021, Detective Mena concluded his investigation and determined that if the driver had been driving at the posted speed limit instead of 124 MPH, this fatal accident would not have happened.

  1. I feel very sad for the families, Rip
Speed kills so heartbroken for the officer that stoped them i hope he is doing well. Thank you for all ur services god bless stay safe. From Kentucky 😢😢😢😢

  2. Sorry, To who this may concern! When you are issued a driver license from so called state, alot of responsibility comes with it ;The driver showed no respect or concern for Anyone ;He does not belong behind any wheel. A beautiful life taken by some jackass !🙏✌️

  3. 3:23 When the officer said ‘when y’all get into a accident it’s he’s fault’ and you can hear the dude say ‘naaa it’s not’ he didn’t care for her life😣this is so sad… rip condolences to both of them though 🙏🏼💐 🕊️

  4. If they had locked him up for the night they would still be here ain’t no way they let him go with no registration, 3 tickets none of them was for speeding and a witness said he was driving erratic. if they were black it’s a 95% chance they would be in handcuffs. This was preventable. This was privilege.

  5. Ok, let me get this straight. You pull him over for reckless driving, running a red light, a civilian pulled over to tell you he was speeding AND almost hit a pedestrian AND you let him go with 3 citations?? That is negligence on behalf of the Deputy, and he should be reprimanded. Hopefully he learns from this unfortunate event.

  6. Although really annoying, I don't blame this officer for pressing his pen so rapidly. He's trying his best to remain calm and collect. It's his only way to cope with the stress at the time. I do think the officer should have taken that person that tried to warn him about their driving more seriously and i don't think he should have given them a break. However, I don't think it's the cop's fault either. They were warned of the consequences, and they decided to drive even faster than before.

  7. Can't help noticing how the truck has, "Now that's a meatball!!" on the side of the trailer. Ironic. Since the dudes head was sheared off by the back of the truck. Horrible thing to see those kids alive half hour before they died. Just a horrible thing…….

  8. Always say that life will give you 3 warnings before something bad happens to you. He was given 3 tickets – those were his 3 warnings and he ignored them.

  9. 😢 sad probably she wanted to go home and ge was mad 😡😤 and refused to take ger home and was just speeding and ended up 😞 crashing 😢 poor girl didn't get home 😢🎉 ❤ that's a Red flag !!! when she said its my fault ! Trying to not make her boy friend madder ! With her !! RIP 😞 she probably was crying 😭😭 and ger makeup came off 😭

  10. Life isn't that special. They don't have to pay 3 tickets anymore. Good for them 👍 Also, the cop being chill about it and not falling apart into a crying mess is the difference between men and women. Death is better than life. I genuinely do not see the problem with what happened except a bunch of teary eyed Redditors commenting.

  11. People in the comments are turning this into some philosophical episode about wisdom and what not. This is nothing to do with any of that. This is pure and simple people who CANNOT DRIVE. It happens every day in America. Tons of people with a driver license and do not obey the rules and laws of the land and don't understand the laws of physics. They don't know the limits of the vehicle, they don't understand the dangers of high-speed driving on public roads, especially on city streets. They don't know stopping distances required at certain speeds. And I blame low standards for being able to obtain a license to drive. Most people don't pay attention to even the most basic traffic laws, like stopping at a stop sign. Word to wise: learn the laws of the road, stay off your cell phones while driving, and stop speeding! Many people don't realize that speeding for fun is one thing, but speeding because you're late will not get you to your destination any faster….don't believe me, plot a destination in Google and calculate the time it takes to distance at various speeds. You'll begin to quickly see that in order for you cut your time to destination in half, you'd have to drive an average of DOUBLE OR MORE the speed. If you're five minutes late and it take you 20 minutes away, you'd have to drive at roughly 125% of the normal pace, or 25% faster than the normal rate. You'll never make that time, because your pace is controlled by traffic signals, vehicle traffic, and some other factors.

  12. this is what happens when you raise your kids with no sense of consequences and discipline. And for you other young guys out there….. showin off for your girl like this isnt being a man…. a real man would NEVER but his girls life in danger, your entire purpose and job in a relationship is making sure your girl is safe and taken care of. If you got your girl in the care youre supposed to be driving extra careful just as you would if you got your kids in the car…. youre supposed to protect them, not be the cause of their death.

  13. Wherever the girl was trying to rush to could've waited , not getting anywhere if your dead or hurt or in jail. RIP to the victims hopefully they didn't hurt anyone else.

  14. This officer is dying inside and it's not even his fault. It's sad really someone was looking out for this couple, it just wasn't the kid behind the wheel.

  15. That guy should have been arrested and the car towed. A highway is one thing, but a city street shows exceptional disregard for his safety and the safety of others. He would have taken the ride…

  16. I hope that officer can talk about this with a counseling ear. He has to process this and deal with it. It obviously is very traumatic and he must feel so helpless! HE DID WHAT HE THOUGHT BEST AND DECENT AT THE TIME. The fact that he gave a break to an idiot that turned around a few minutes later and killed himself is NOT THE OFFICERS FAULT.

  17. Some brown stain of a lawyer can probably "prove" the cops liable for not arresting him and towing the car. He let him drive off on a provisional after hours.
