I'm not positive but I'd think that if you were trying to preserve a species in captivity for viable reintroduction to the wild, you would need to not do things like trying to breed for specific visual traits like the high whites or w.e. You would want to preserve some of the natural variation on genetics and keep the adaptations the naturally occurred.
